Quarantine Question

Featured Replies

Posted

Hi,

I was discussing the necessity etc for quarantining new birds in separate cages/rooms, etc, with a friend, and he raised a question, that I had no idea how to answer, and I thought I would ask here, as you are all way more knowledgeable than I will ever be!

His question was:

"What about when birds are taken to shows, and are in show cages on those racks with other birds all around, why doesn't it apply then?"

Thanks,

Robyn

Only cage fronts are the access for the birds................no sides of cages etc. A lot of show breeders keep their birds that go to shows in seperate cages ( quarantine ) and treat in whatever way they see fit before releasing them back with the others.

Also noone takes obviously ill birds and any that would appear to be "off "in any way would be taken out of the show.

Thanks heaps Kaz, I will relay the response!

Also so be considered is how much show breeders look after their flocks on a medical basis. Doxy for psittacosis is put through the flock a couple of times a year, Ronivet or similar for Canker, etc. These birds are looked after more than the average pet budgie..............preventative medications-wise that is.
