Posted December 9, 201014 yr Hi all. I had a (rescued) budgie named Cheeky as a child. Cheeky was a noisy, communicative bird and although not hand-tame, he was very friendly. My eight year old daughter has asked for a budgie as a pet, and as I had a positive experience with Cheeky, am quite happy for her to have one (and for me to share the responsibility of caring for it until my daughter is grown up enough to do it herself). However, as I am an immigrant (from South Africa), and not familiar with budgie-keeping in Perth, I was wondering where the best place to get a baby budgie is? Our local pet store offers them, but am not sure whether this is the best option. We've decided on a baby as it will hopefully be easier to hand tame (with patience). Although I know I will probably end up doing the bulk of the caring until my daughter has been budgie-tamed (just as baby budgie needs to be people trained!), I would like for her to learn as much as she can about caring for it. Are there DVDs or books aimed at young budgie keepers that you can recommend? I live in north of the river in Perth, and was wondering if there are any local budgie keepers that would be willing to have my daughter and I visit before we purchase her budgie, so that she can see what its really like?

Hi, I am also in Perth and I know people you can trust to get your budgie from. I can give you contact details. There are a couple of your local pet stores you should avoid .....so I can tell you those too behind scenes in messages. We use the PM system here for private messages.
December 9, 201014 yr Thanks Kaz, I'd appreciate any recommendations you can make. hi-sorry to take so long to reply!the answer you got from kaz is spot on-i got my 6 birds from a breeder-im sure kaz can give you some great recommendations, and i would be more than happy to put you in touch with the lovely man i got my birds from!you can get some great advice on this and many other forums,i would recommend after an initial settling in period, once the bird is calm and feeding-a least a day or two, letting your daughter slowly introduce her hand into the bottom of the cage holding a sprig of millet spray and talking softly without approaching the bird at first-just for ten minutes a couple times a day-over time she can raise her hand towards the bird, and hopefully it will start eating the millet and then go onto her finger to feed.also, get a boy as they are usually easier to tame!hope this helps!lorns Edited December 9, 201014 yr by lorns
