Hey

I have been a budgie owner for a little over a year, got my first on in june 2009, but I got her a mate just last week...I know nothing is gong to just suddenly happen and I'll have baby budgies crawling around the cage, but what can I do other than getting a nest box to make the new love birds more comfortable?? I will try to post some pics shortly just need to find the cord for my camera.

Quarantine is keeping your new bird in a different cage and room from your current one to make sure no diseases are passed. You should wash hands/change clothes/have shower before going between birds. Budgies aren't like dogs, cats or even horses. Diseases can be hidden really well, once they show up it is often too late to do anything. Often diseases come out during stress, when they come to a new place for example.

As for the nest box, that is a BIG no. That will force them to breed, even though your new one is obviously too young. This in turn will cause egg related problems, such as egg binding, which can be fatal.

Providing them a healthy, varied diet of greens, cereals and fruits will prolong their lives. Just seed is extremely fatty, and in the long term will cause ill health.

Plastic/metal/sandpaper perches are bad for their feet and will cause bumblefoot. Happy/snuggle huts are just like a nest box and will cause egg laying.

thank you so much for your advice..how long is the recomennded qeuarantine period?.

30-60 days, I'd do it for 30 or 45 days. Some avian vets recommend 90 days.

Everyone has to start somewhere, no probs about the advice.

( he he, would you believe me if I told you I was only twelve?)

Absolutely!! You obviously know what you are talking about from owning six budgies.

Just because you are younger doesn't mean I know more than yo, which has been proven with what I didn't know, I wasn't even told about separating the birds the lady at the pet store said they'd be okay to be together right away as long as they got along.

Imagine how furious I am at her, I know how I'm spending my afternoon tomorrow!!

pet shops rarely know anything

ratz gave you some brilliant advice

it is much better to find a local breeder than buy from pet shop not only are chances of bird being sick less but price will be cheaper also

and most will offer you to fall back on them with a call or what not if you have questions

Go shout at her for me! By giving that 'advice', she could have killed birds  .

Agree that pet shops usually know nothing. I asked a lady there how she told males and females apart.... she had never heard of a cere before.

Advice you have been given is correct, and NEVER listen to pet store staff.

Do you have a better photo of the birds please............the other one was very grainy and both seemed to have brown ceres. Not only that but you have to be certain the ages are over 12 months, and the green one has clipped wings. I assume you can see better than we can what colour cere it has ? Because it looks brown in that bad photo. BUT if it was a male you were expecting to breed with, he cannot with clipped wings.
