Posted November 27, 201014 yr Hi guys and gals. For christmas I am getting an aviary. I am VERY VERY VERY excited. I am going to get some budgies from a local budgerigar breeder. This summer is probably gonna be quite hot and I know that budgies, especially young ones, can suffer from the heat. Basically the question I wanna ask is: " Is it O.K to put young budgies in an outdoor aviary during the months of January and February?" A reply soon would be GREAT!
November 27, 201014 yr Yes it will be fine as long it is not a very hot day, try and pick them up on a day that is not hotter than say 30, Budgies get stressed on really hot days. Oh make sure your car is not hot when you put them in as that will kill them too. Edited November 27, 201014 yr by splat
November 27, 201014 yr I wouldnt. I think they need to acclimatise from a few months earlier if the weather is going to be hot. Some aviaries rooflines are too low increasing how hot it is. Some aviaries have no shade. Its all very well to consider the temperature earlier in the day when they go in, but if the roofline is low and radiates heat, if theres no shade then its not much better than putting them in an oven. You say young budgies ? How young ?
November 27, 201014 yr Author Thanks Guys. Your information has helped me a lot. What time would you recommend I get them? Also, when I say young I mean between 8 weeks and 12 weeks.
November 27, 201014 yr if your in vic or weathers more muggy than hot right now if you got the birds for Christmas and the aviary id say be okay spesh if their aviary breed birds if they were bred inside a breeding room well thats different and id wait till end feb early march to bring them home as will be just nice then do you have a description of your aviary is it open to weather or closed with one side open :?
November 27, 201014 yr Author My aviary is from D&L Classic Aviaries Go to the website http://www.classicpetenclosures.com.au/ Click Bird Aviaries My one is the "All Purpose" BA636 Forgot to mention: Yes Im from Victoria, Australia I am buying budgies from mainly out door breeders. Llyoid in rowville (where I live) and Vince (in bayswater) Does anyone know where Vince lives. I got my first budgie from him years ago and forgotten where he lives.
November 27, 201014 yr Hey Taylor The aviary sounds like a good idea, but ive got a couple of questions -Where will the aviary be placed? -Will there be draughts where the aviary is placed. This could be a problem because from the pictures of the aviary there is no enclosed area that will be weather proof for the birds. Good luck with buying your new birds.
November 27, 201014 yr No safety door...........you will lose birds out through the door every time you use it. Meantime get a net ( the kind that hangs over beds off a hoop ) and attach it above the door..............step in through the net to open the door and any escapes will be caught in the net section before they get away. When not in use, throw the net up on top of the aviary. Dont risk going through a door with no safety net in place.
November 28, 201014 yr Author The aviary will be placed on my veranda. Above my veranda grows a wisteria. It is easily a metre thick and even in the thunderstorms we've been having down here, you only get a little wet. The back is enclosed and so is one of the sides. The side that isn't enclosed is facing a window to the house, so no rain can get in. Our veranda is completely covered in thick wisteria so hardly any wind come in. It also keeps the extreme heat out and cool in. Also, how many budgies would be suitable in this aviary? Does any one know of any private budgie breeders in the Eastern Melbourne area?
November 28, 201014 yr Sounds like a good spot to put the aviary Use a bird net to enclose that end of the verandah as your safety area. Bird nets are cheap and easy to find at hardware stores.............its the bird netting used for fruit trees. You can most likely have ten budgies in that space.
November 28, 201014 yr I'm don't personally know any breeders out that side but check out the BCV website and find your nearest club. They might be able to point you in the right direction...
