Posted November 27, 201014 yr hi,couple of months ago i bought a male and female budgie from a show breeder, they were about 4mths at the time-they have bonded, and are very much "in love"..awww...i decided to go back to breeder and buy another male,(i know, should have left well alone!)the breeder suggested one of same age as pair i bought-i introduced slowly from seperate cage etc,and things have gone okay they eat together, and fly together etc-my problem is new boy is left out by pair-im going to go and get a female tomorrow,as the breeder feels too many males and one female would cause problems for my female when it comes to mating(im not planning on breeding)i just dont want my female harassed!!!(ive only had one pair before, who i had for ten years, they never bred)my querie is do i introduce new female same as i did the male,or do i put the male back into introduction cage with new female and start process again?tonight is first night new male has spent in main cage with my pair.sorry this is so long winded,i just want to try and get things right for the birds!any advice, suggestions would be appreciated.thanks!
November 27, 201014 yr Leave the male in with the pair you already have an then introduce the new female after a month... are your birds outside? How far apart are the cages?
November 27, 201014 yr Author Leave the male in with the pair you already have an then introduce the new female after a month... are your birds outside? How far apart are the cages? hi-the cages are next to each other, and the birds are indoors-the main cage is a large parrot type cage, wouldnt have more than four in it-the doors open for them all day, closed at bedtime, and a large room to fly around!and they have toys hanging from the patio doors to play on-like parrot toys you can get for budgies.
November 27, 201014 yr Would it be possible to put one of the cages in another room? Its just that if your new hen has any illness there is a chance that she could pass it on to your birds. Do a search for Quarantine on the forums and you'll find out more information Good luck with growing your flock
November 27, 201014 yr Author hi-i hadnt thought of quarantine as she was from the same breeder as the other three it didnt occur to me-the breeder has been keeping, breeding and showing his birds for decades-he has many rosettes, and his flock arent as big as they used to be with his advancing age etc-been in the aviary and his husbandry is excellent-all his birds are beautiful!!!do you think i should still quarantine?the breeder didnt mention it,but i suppose its better safe than sorry!the girl i got today is a spangle, shes blue with a white head-not sure of the correct terminology!the other female is a recessive pied-yellow and green-cant remember what the right names are for the two males, think new boy is a spangle too-green and yellow but cant remember what other male is-hes blue with a white face!met my new boys father today-he is a show bird-but the birds i have arent show birds, not quite sure how it all works-going to start reading up on budgie types and breeding, and maybe one day,way way down the line, try it for myself!!!sorry to ramble on so much,im just so happy with my little flock!!! November 28, 201014 yr Its really up to you... I would but its ultimately down to personal preference... Its only been 2 months but its still possible for the breeders birds to get a strain of something and then pass it on to your birds... better safe than sorry I say..
