i put a pair down to breed a couple of days ago as they were bonding in the aviary and are of breeding condition,he is a normal grey but fairly large and she is a olive green spangle who i had planned to pair up with a different cock. They preen each other and he feeds her but he seems more interested in the perch, she gets angry at this and then starts attacking the perch.I know its normal for a cock to masterbate but is it normal for the hen to get jealous and start attacking the perch like she wants to kill it?

 

oh and forgot to mention she is 2yrs old and he is 18 months

Budgies can be very strange creatures indeed, I have had cock birds do this and have found them to be useless in the breeding cage as they never fill eggs just perches lol.

As for the hen she is just frustrated with her mate and is taking it out on the perch Try a different cock bird who is more experienced.
