Posted November 6, 201014 yr okay, Why do some people seperate the hens and cocks in different aviaries or flights? I have plenty of room and wondering if I should bother - I have 15 birds in the flights at the moment. Edited November 6, 201014 yr by Harry
November 6, 201014 yr I wouldnt. There"s no real reason to keep them seperate. Some hens get fat and lazy if they are with same sexes. If in with cocks they are more active.
November 6, 201014 yr Author okay, does having them seperated prevent or reduce them from bonding? If they were seperated they would be in a cage right next to the others - thought I might add this
November 6, 201014 yr Bonding ? You know.........you can put a cock and hen into a breeding cage that have never met before in their life, and five seconds later the hen can be assuming a mating position and the cock mating her. Too much is often made of BONDING information as is the old wives tale about budgies mating for life ( which they dont ). Harry.........try not to overthink the processes............ its easier than you think
November 6, 201014 yr As Kaz said they are much better flying all together, keeps the hens active. When preparing for breeding season I do seperate mine about 3 weeks before hand and that mainly is so I know they haven't been mated by another bird. BUT other than that they all fly together. Over the summer months and before breeding season I have young cocks in with older hens and young hens in with older cocks. I still have my babies flying seperate for a few months because they get extra tib bits for growing birds.
November 7, 201014 yr My hens are getting chubby on their own . Marigold has always been.... big boned.... but she's going overboard now. I'm wondering whether to put them all back together now ( sorry for hijacking ). Anyway, yes, it is good for them to be in altogether. Edited November 7, 201014 yr by Ratzy

Fat can be amount of space and exercise and whether or not they get enough flying where they are.
