Trouble Laying

One of my female budgies has a hard time laying - she kept going into her box but nothing happened - I checked her over and she was not eggbound so I kept an eye on her a week later she had finally layed and egg however it was smeared with blood!

She was fine when I checked after - this was week before last - this week, just gone, having the same trouble - she seems fine within herself - anyway I asked someone who used to breed budgies what I could do to help her loosen up so to speak!

I was going to give her until friday and then take it further if what I was told did not work!

As to what I was told was the simplest thing ' Give her some oil' - I got a syringe filled it with olive oil - I got hold of my female and offered her it in drops and she was lapping the oil up!

The next day she layed her egg!

I am now putting oil in her food and it seems to be working

I do not know if this is common knowledge but I had never heard of it before - so I thought I would share this simple sollution in case it is needed by someone else who had not heard of it!

 :fear

never heard of that one, I actually work at a vet and we use KY Jelly. Very CAREFULLY we put a small amount in a syringe and insert it "up there" then they get warm bath soaks 3 x daily and increase the humidity. It works very well with both egg bound and "almost" egg bound birds of all sizes.

I wonder how exactly the oil works, what spoecific kind of oil did you use? thanks for the tip.

a very small amount of olive oil added to the seed twice a week make sure the seed is not soaken in it though

yeah I've read about that, if in reall need as in you know the hen is eggbound you can rub some around the vent which is meant to help too.

Glad to hear you little one is okay now
