Posted October 31, 201014 yr 2 top cages are for breeding. I saw the birds mating several times, but they don't seem to get pregnant. They don't often enter the nestbox, either. I also provided just a little bedding which tuned out to be not so helpful. As you see in the picture, the livingroom has a window with an out-view. Now, the cage is covered with a partition so that the birds would not care about the people at home. However, I doubt if they feel nervous because they can see outside through the window behind the cage. Can it be the reason they don't breed? I already covered half the window & I'm thinking of using the blind to cover all the window. Would they lack the sunlight? The pictures below show the newly designed cages & the partition seperates the cages from the people. Are they good enough? Should I cover other sides? Will the partition work properly? October 31, 201014 yr Is it just me or does the top picture show the nestbox's with 2 holes and the bottom pictures only show one? Personally, I would remove the toys that are in the breeding cage and the swings. I'd just have the 2 perches going from front to back like you have, but probably a little closer together...
October 31, 201014 yr Author Thanks. I changed two-hole nestboxes into one-hole nestboxes. Is it just me or does the top picture show the nestbox's with 2 holes and the bottom pictures only show one? October 31, 201014 yr I would suggest that the birds would feel vulnerable in the window like that. Good for sunlight but they would feel vulnerable. How old are the birds ? Are you sure of the sexes ? PS Very nice size cages for breeding
October 31, 201014 yr Author Thanks. They are 11 months old. I'm sure they are male & female. Only the birds in the white cage mated. The hen in the red cage is splay. I can't move the cages. Is there anything else I can do? I would suggest that the birds would feel vulnerable in the window like that. Good for sunlight but they would feel vulnerable. How old are the birds ? October 31, 201014 yr Personally, I would remove the toys that are in the breeding cage and the swings. Interesting, Jimmy. I always make sure to have a few toys and a swing in my breeding cages, mainly so they are in place for the babies when they fledge. But I would guess that breeders who run many cabinets at a time wouldn't bother with all of that. So, what do the rest of you do? By the way, Hans, I like your second set up a lot better than the old way. But if you close those blinds, they will get all poopy, and I think it would be very hard to get them clean again. I see that your partition folds. Maybe you could fold it so that two panels are between the cages and the window, and the third panel folds around the right side of the cages. That way they would have a sort of 3 sided niche they were in with only the front being open to the living room. I think they would feel pretty secure like that. I have read that light that is filtered by a window is not as good as direct sunlight, so to combat that, I give my budgies vitamin D and calcium in their water. I think your birds are very pretty! Do you have any close up pictures of them?

November 1, 201014 yr Author As you see, the nestbox is on the left side. Cuz the wall is on the left & the living room is to the right, so that the budgies would feel secure. But they don't stay long inside the nestbox, but spend most of time on the perch on the right, even at night while sleeping. When I try moving the cage, the budgies seem to stay on the right side giving up the perch with themselves hanging on the cage. Why do they want to keep on the right side near the window? Should I move the nestbox to the right side? Edited November 1, 201014 yr by hans
November 1, 201014 yr Hello Hans, it is not eazy to get budgies to breed when you only have two pairs. Budgies are very social and like to nest together in large numbers. My only suggestion is to leave a radio on during the day making the area sound busy not quiet and perhaps swap the cock birds over to try and stimulate the hens, good luck, your set up looks lovely I'd love to have birds in my house, but my wife hates birds! Cheers Clearwing
