just a couple of questions....

1. what do the ring colours mean i hear people talk about red and blue rings?

2.is cinnamon a sex linked variety? what other colours are?

3. how many rounds should you let a breeding couple go for?

4. how many times a year do budgies moult?

5. are you meant to keep cocks and hens separate throughout the year?

any help would be much appreciated

People who show budgies in Australia, and other countries) are required to put a ring on the birds leg soon after it is born to signify what year the bird was born, who the breeder was and what number chick the chick is... Each year the colour changes.

2. Can't rememberto be honest, if you check out the FAQ section and search for sex linked I'm sure there are plenty of info on them...

3. It really depends on your birds, some can only do one and then need a break, I've heard of some peoples birds doing 3 rounds... If you observe your birds close enough they'll tell you when they need a break.

4. Moults can be caused by a few things, stress and sickness, and then there are normal moults...

5. Each breeder has an opinion on this, from what I can gather, most breeders say keep the together. Some will split juviniles and adults rather than based on Gender.

Hope I helped, I'm sure others with more wisdom than I will come and fix my mistakes soon :)

just a couple of questions....

1. what do the ring colours mean i hear people talk about red and blue rings? The year birds were born. So red is 2009 rings, blue is 2010, purple is 2011 etc.

2.is cinnamon a sex linked variety? what other colours are?

3. how many rounds should you let a breeding couple go for? I generally only let mine do one, but they can go for two and on the third you should foster eggs out.

4. how many times a year do budgies moult?

5. are you meant to keep cocks and hens separate throughout the year? I don't, and I know some breeders do though. "The hens become lazy and out of condition, and you find that cock birds and hens don't come into condition at the same time" - Budgerigar Worl Magazine.

any help would be much appreciated

just to be a pain but i have a few more questions...

1.does the colour of a bird have any affect on its size? eg. would a grey bird be smaller than say a green?

2.how close should your birds be related when linebreeding?

!. heredity plays a part in size not colour.

2. everyone will have a different answer. I wont breed mother to son, father to daughter, brother to sister.

thanks kaz, yeah the breeder i went to siad that if you pair greys up they have smaller offspring which i thought sounded weird

There are still a lot of myths about pairing x colour to x colour = reduces size. I dont believe its true at all, I always think back to Jim Marshalls birds in Canada. He has repeatedly taken out major canadian and some american shows with two lines - a sky blue line (only pairs sky blue to sky blue) and a light grey line (only pairs grey to grey with no dark factors). He has some monster birds and only after securing those lines for years has he gone back to other varieties, spangles and greens. Both of which he put to his grey line which is better than his blue line a bit, so now has spangle greys and normal grey greens and greens. Also has yellowfaces and some more now I believe as well as a new mutation he refers to as the 'speckle' variety.
