lost 2 of my show budgies this morning, 1 of my normal budgies seriosly ill. Fed them the usual food nothing new. Gundam seems to be having seizures, laboured breathing and shivering. Earliest I can get them to a vet or get a vet here is monday. Any help will be appreciated.

have they been poisoned? seizures are sometimes a consequence of metal poisoning. is there any rust in their environment?

have you recently introduced any new birds into the aviary?

It sounds like some rather vicious infection is ready to sweep through your flock. I wish I could help, but the only thing I can do is press you to get emergency vet treatment ASAP, before Monday! Even if it means you have to beg or borrow. This dosent sound good at all. How many birds do you have, would it be possible to seperate every bird for observation at all? (like a quarantine) Id hate for more of your birds to get sick  Poisoning is also a possibility as pixie just daid. Have you fed them any different raw foods, or changed the seed? I would immediately start off sterilising the cages with an avian safe disinfectant though, keep infection and cross infection risks down to a minimum. Clean up the poops at least 1/2 dozen times a day, so if it IS an infection, the risk of spread can at least be lessened.

Gundam just died in my arms, so far I've lost my two youngest show budgies and my oldest normal budgie. There was a ladder that started rusting in the show budgie aviary(which I removed as soon as I saw the rust), but not in the normal budgie aviary. I introduced new birds into the normal budgie aviary about two weeks ago (after quarantine). I've quarantined my lutino (because she was just sitting on the floor) and my sky blue opaline (bleeding forehead). And moved my one female known to biting to another part of the aviary.

Oh heavens,it sounds awful. Hope you get some help.

How terribly sad. I am so sorry for you gofD. I do hope all gets sorted as fast as possible. If you find out the cause, please would you share it with us? its situations like this where we can all learn something, and possibly salvage something good out of a very sad situation.

I am so sorry.

Anne

it may be possible that one of the new birds has brought in a contagous disease to the aviary without you knowing. some diseases can lay dormant for several weeks without the carrier showing any signs of symptoms.

i think you have done the right thing and everything in your power to stop the disease from spreading. certainly clean and disinfect the aviary as much as you possibly can, as some diseases can be spread through feather dust and things like that.

i hope that the infection comes under control soon, and i think chirpy is right - we could possibly all learn something from this very traumatic situation. i would never wish anything like this on anyone - i have been through a similar situation with my two budgies just recently. it is horrible.

please keep us informed of the situation and cause, i hope the rest of your birds will be okay.

I spoke to our preacher (also a birdlover) and he told me to go and get some antibiotics (Doxybiotic to be precise), which I'll be doing tomorrow morning as soon as the shops open. I'll be having a sleepless night as I'll be checking my aviaries every few hours. Thanks for everybodies understanding, support and help.

im sorry to read this post. i hope that all the other budgies will recover.

please let us know how things are.

Just found another little one on the floor of the aviary. Keeps making short cheeping sounds. When breething you can hear a popping? liquid? sound almost like a blocked? runny? nose. Doesn't make an effort to fly or anything, just sits on my hand crying.

He just pooped on my hand and his stool is watery white with yellow dot in middle. Definately not a good sign.

Little one is sitting on the floor with head on floor and bottom in the air. Not cheeping anymore. Breathing still sounding laboured.

Just got back going to give them the antibiotic (Doxybiotic). They also gave me a disinfectant (Virkon S) can anyone tell me if it is good and safe to use?

i don't know. but if the vets gave it you it should be alright.

Its really upset me to read the posts. Must be very traumatic to see all the suffering budgies.

GofD I am so sorry that all this is happening to you and your budgie. :(

Little one passed away no less than 5 minutes ago. None of the others seem sick, but I'll be keeping a watchfull eye on them. I've given them the antibiotic and the seem to be drinking it. Hopefully it works and no more will die, tearing my heart assunder.

I sure hope the antibiotics work, and I'm sorry for the little one who just passed away. :(

Oh no, i hope this situation gets under control soon. :( I'm very sorry for your losses. Please let us know how things go at the vets. :doctor:

GofD how are the budgies today. I am so sorry to hear about the problems. You must be stressing out.

Have you had a thought to what it maybe?

I had a similar problem years ago when I first started to Breed Budgies.

One by one they started to die and I didn't know why.

I feed them the same that I had been doing for months and they okay. But then they started to die.

I found out that my father had started to use posions on weeds in the garden. I was feeding them thistle, which they loved. He didn't know I was feeding them the thistle. I didn't know he was spraying it. I lost 12 birds over a weeks period. It was heart breaking.

Check to see if some one is spraying or using something around the aviary. It may drift in on the wind.

:( Good Grief...I pray you find a remedy soon, Good luck with the vets , I hope all the others stay well for you..

What a sad, sad post to read. Please let us know what the vet said. It may be a very good idea to have necropsies done to find out what is going on.

So sorry to hear that news GofD, it is so sad, I hope your other budgies will be saved. Take care.

Been having sleepless nights, checking up on the birds every few hours. None of the others seem sick but I keep a sharp eye on them. Hopefully none of them are sick and the antibiotic is helping. I'll give you all another status report if something happens.

Daz - I know for a fact we haven't been spraying any poisons (I don't come near any poisons or even perfume for that matter because of my asthma, one whiff and I get an attack), but I'll check with the neighbor's.

bad food bits??
