How about we post pics and info about our new chicks instead of talking about the depressing stories of the ones weve lost. the main reason i have started this is because i got my first ever eggs a few weeks ago and the posts of chicks dying are just making me pesimistic about mine. okay post away

Ive posted my good news about my chicks in other threads :D

okay what have you breed recently

I laughed when I read this. Sorry but I did.

The truth is some years you have good results, other years you have heart breaking results. The trick is to be prepared, prepare your birds by getting them in the healthiest possible condition, then be prepared should something not go according to plan. I think it would be a disservice if people didn't point out the bad side of breeding (losing chicks and/ or parents) people should be informed about the good and the bad side of things. Sure no one likes the bad side but its there. Better prepare for it while we can.

okay, I have had a bit of a win from what started as a disaster. A month ago I was away for a few days and my friend was caring for my birds which included a nest of three, two week old chicks. Sadly she accidentally left the door unlatched and dad got out and flew away. Mum was feeding them but not fantastic as dad was the main food giver, so after lots of reading and video watching I started to crop feed them. I know they are now quite capable of feeding themselves but they hang on the cage and squeal when they see me, so I am still topping them up. They are so darn cute I can't resist. Will post some pics if I every figure out how to do it!

Darnit!!! I posted this long reply about my current breeding situation and got an error which cancelled out my post!! wacko.gif

thats okay sunnie. thanks for the reply dellouisa, i am so exited about my first eggs, i run outside like very two minutes and stare at the breeding box in my avariy, i know it will never happen but i keep expecting to see a little head poke.

fingers crossed

It will be quite some time before you see that little head poking out, they start off way too small for head poking! lol :)

You will hear the peeping long before you will see a head poking out!

i know, what does the peeping sound like, is it more high pitched than the adults?

You will notice it as soon as you hear it, it is a soft squeaking sound when they are first hatched.

thanks for the info, i posted a question in the one titled New and Need Advice that i also started. could you please have a look at it.

If an egg is due to hatch you can quite often hear the chick peeping inside the egg if you hold it to your ear.

NO, no,no! There is no reason to handle the eggs! (Sorry, Delouisa, bad advice.) The germs and oils from your hands can contaminate them. Sometimes we have reasons for picking up an egg, but it is best to avoid this, if possible.
