October 25, 201014 yr Kaz i was thinking when i get the breeding boxes i will put the pair i want to mate together in the middle of November, that way when the eggs will hatch it will be December so i will be on school holidays, therefore i can be around 24/7 if they need me, i would probably only breed at this time each year. Which pair are you talking about? The one on eggs, or the other pair? If I recall correctly, the one on eggs was really thin, and doesn't she need a good long rest, to get into better condition? How is the condition of the other hen? Just make sure she is getting a high quality diet, with lots of vegetables, vitamins, calcium supplements, to make sure she has a good nutritional foundation. I don't know if 3 weeks is long enough to build her up properly, though.
October 26, 201014 yr Used to have them as a kid but more recently had a couple but they passed away and am waiting to move house, which has taken a lot longer than planned, so that I can get right into the swing of breeding. I don't give out advice if I'm not sure of the answer, but you are right nothing beats personal experience when it comes to knowing stuff. Most of what I have learnt is from books or online. But don't worry, my most popular section according to my Stats is 'Off Topic Chatter' LOL - no worries - I haven't actually checked out the 'Off Topic Chatter' - I've been too busy reading up on all the budgie-related stuff. Look forward to your input Jimmy.

October 26, 201014 yr Author thanks Gb for the advice, i have a cobalt cock called Puff(picture on other page) that has never bred before and a nice big hen called rosie( picture on other page) that also has never bred before. i was also thinking of geting another hen so i have two hens and two big cocks to breed. also if/when i get the new breeding cabinets should i put food on the bottom so that she can eat if the cocks not feeding or is that bad.
October 26, 201014 yr If you buy another hen she will need to be quarantined away from the others in a seperate cage and seperate airspace at least 5 metres away for minimum 30 days. You cant put her straight down to breed. Please read up in our faq section on quarantine. NO.......you dont need to put food on the floor of the cage. Edited October 26, 201014 yr by KAZ
October 26, 201014 yr Author okay thanks Kaz, ill probably try and get rosie and Puff in the best condition possible so that they can breed, do you know anything good i can add to their diet apart from what i mentioned above.
October 26, 201014 yr Not just about diet buddy...........also they have to be showing they are in proper condition by cere colour too.
October 26, 201014 yr Author what should i be looking for in cere colour? and also in the how do you prepare for breeding Faq what do you mean by best and worst points.
October 27, 201014 yr Cere colour and breeding condition relies on the bird being in tip top shape as far as healthy goes, being the right time of year that they feel like breeding, having an excellent diet, NOT moulting etc Your job is to NOT put any birds down to breed that arent in the best possible condition. Your job is to prepare them months ahead of breeding. Not to put down to breed a bird you just got and dont know the history of. Edited October 27, 201014 yr by KAZ
October 27, 201014 yr Author okay Kaz, i was thinking of breeding the budgies ive had for a while. the female is vey big and healthy and her cere is slightly crusty which i read was good for breeeding condition in females. the male is also healthy and plump and his cere is bright blue. also i still dont know what you mean by god and bad points.
October 27, 201014 yr . also i still dont know what you mean by god and bad points. in relation to what ? I dont know what you mean either by quoting good and bad points
October 27, 201014 yr Author it says in the Faq, " I note her best points and her worst point. I then pick the cocks that have good points that will counter her bad points and visa versa." what does this mean?
October 27, 201014 yr I would say that is talking about when you are trying to produce show birds... You want to pair birds up that will compliment each other and not birds that have the same faults...
October 27, 201014 yr Author okay thanks jimmy, i dont need to worry about it then. also do you know what offspring i would get with a violet cock and a yellow/green hen? hey Kaz will i need to buy a net or something to transfer birds from aviary to breeding cabinet and vice versa
October 27, 201014 yr It talks about show budgie faults. Things like short mask, bad spots, crossed wings etc . Basically you dont put two birds together that are considered to have the same bad fault. Only applies to show budgies really okay thanks jimmy, i dont need to worry about it then. also do you know what offspring i would get with a violet cock and a yellow/green hen? hey Kaz will i need to buy a net or something to transfer birds from aviary to breeding cabinet and vice versa green is dominant.............so unless the green bird is split for blue you only get more green budgies. Yes you will need a net. Same place I said to get the breeding cages..........cheaper there
October 27, 201014 yr Author okay, judging from my pictures from previous pages, would you say that Rosie (yellow/green hen) and Puff (violet cock) are healthy enough to breed.
October 27, 201014 yr If you mean scruff and rosie then rosie isnt a green budgie. She is YF blue.....and recessive pied too. Edited October 27, 201014 yr by KAZ
October 27, 201014 yr Author Also what colour or characteristics would i need to breed one of the golden face ones with the blue body? i mean puff the purple one sitting on the yellow perch. if rosie is YF blue does that mean i could get some blue chicks? and lastly do you think that they are healthy enough for breeding condition. also is there an Faq that will teach me how to distinguish budgie colours and stuff, i have heard you talk about clearwing, cinnamon wings and pieds and stuff in other threads and i would like to know how to look at a budgie and tell this
October 27, 201014 yr Budgie males cere like this is considered in breeding condition Rosie may be about to go out of condition where her cere is so brown and wrinkly its about to peel off and go out of condition. Light to medium brown is the colour you aim for. Also what colour or characteristics would i need to breed one of the golden face ones with the blue body? You need to have a golden face to begin with..........paired to a blue. if rosie is YF blue does that mean i could get some blue chicks? Yes also is there an Faq that will teach me how to distinguish budgie colours and stuff, i have heard you talk about clearwing, cinnamon wings and pieds and stuff in other threads and i would like to know how to look at a budgie and tell this Look in our mutations section
October 27, 201014 yr Author okay thanks for answering, rosies cere is slightly crusty and not dark brown, it is more of a dark tan colour. the male budgies i have their cere looks very similar to that one in the photo.
October 28, 201014 yr I don't mean to be rude Pride, but you REALLY REALLY need to read all the FAQ's and understand them, then read them again, because the majority of the stuff you're asking is in there. You're very lucky (as was I when I first joined the forum), that Kaz is such a patient person.
October 28, 201014 yr To add to the confusion ,Waaaay back, you mentioned you gave your birds lettuce and APPLE-----I think if memory serves me right APPLE SEEDS are toxic so make sure you don't leave seed in when giving them apple.
