New, and Need Advice

You would be able to buy two breeder cages ( wooden ones with nestboxes ) for your $90.

Breeding pairs or mating pairs ? Depends on how truthful the seller is about what they are calling a mating pair :P

Wow, there has been a lot going on in this thread while I have been asleep on the other side of the world!:o

Welcome to the forum, Pride.:) I see you are getting links to a lot of helpful information.

I wanted to jump in and add, that even though Dave and GB's advice seems harsh, to throw away all the eggs, it really is the least painful alternative to watching your thin hen run down thinner and thinner, and possibly die. Or even if she lives, watching the chicks die one by one.

I don't know if you've made up your mind about that or not. If it helps, I can tell you that I have just gone through a disaster breeding season, because even though I thought my birds were well fed and healthy, I misread their condition. And as a result, I had hens who got sick or injured before the chicks were ready to leave the nest box, and I had a lot of fertile eggs, but they would hatch, and then die within a few days, due to the mothers' inability to feed them properly. By the time I knew I had a problem, it was too late for me to just throw all the eggs away and rest my hens. But believe me, they are getting a good long rest now, with as best nutrition as I can manage to give them, and I will be checking their weight and signs of health more thoroughly in the future before I breed them again.

If you decide to let these eggs hatch, you will be setting yourself up for a lot of heartache, especially if you care about your hen.

Good luck, it's good to see that you are taking our comments well and working on preparing yourself to be a successful breeder, eventually.:)

I am involved in show budgies. I have around 400 right now. I work from home so I can watch over the birds all the time.

Yes.....but not till they are past 8-10 months of age

You Perth People are up way to late for me to keep up with the posts... Kaz would you transfer the nestbox to a cage now or add more nest box's to the aviary... I'm just thinking, transferring the chicks and parents to a cage at this stage would be very stressful, I know colony breeding isn't the best option but I'm trying to think outside the square here...

Actually what might be the best option is transferring the other hen and cock into a holding cage, that would be the least disruptive and they wouldn't be tempted to breed without the nestboxs...

Thats what I'd do if you are sure you want to breed Pride. Transfer the non breeding pair into a holding cage when you get one, and I wouldnt connect a nestbox to it yet.

Kaz would you transfer the nestbox to a cage now NO

or add more nest box's to the aviary...MAYBE

Kaz i was thinking when i get the breeding boxes i will put the pair i want to mate together in the middle of November, that way when the eggs will hatch it will be December so i will be on school holidays, therefore i can be around 24/7 if they need me, i would probably only breed at this time each year.

Where were you planning on putting the breeding cabinet/cage? If you're breeding at that time you need to think about weather and how hot the cage and nestbox will get...

Jimmy,

I notice from your profile that you don't appear to have any budgies, bred them or show them, yet you seem to be posting a lot of advice.

I'm not trying to be rude or have a go at you - I'm just wondering if you used to keep/breed/show budgies, or how you know so much about them?

Used to have them as a kid but more recently had a couple but they passed away and am waiting to move house, which has taken a lot longer than planned, so that I can get right into the swing of breeding.

I don't give out advice if I'm not sure of the answer, but you are right nothing beats personal experience when it comes to knowing stuff. Most of what I have learnt is from books or online.

But don't worry, my most popular section according to my Stats is 'Off Topic Chatter' :)

Despite his current lack of budgies Jimmy give great advice :D

Hahaha thanks Kaz, I do try. I often do think I post a bit to much though... It's just to hard not too :)

kaz you still havent answered where can i get the breeding boxes.

You should be able to get breeding boxes from the same place you get your cabinets or cage from... or eBay, I haven't looked recently but sometimes they post them up...

Thanks KAZ and GB :D

You can buy whats called a flight cage which is around 60cms wide by 41cms by 41cms and they have a door for the nestbox usually at the side..................generally under $50 each. Or you go to the Avicultural Society meetings....Acton Tce Belmont.....last sunday of every month and you can buy wooden breeding cages there cheaper than that.

I already told you where :) go there this sunday.
