Also, putting budgies down to breed just as you get them is a no no. Nest boxes are an invitation to breed. Take them out when she is finished. If you keep them in she will literally kill herself with over-breeding and any chicks will breed too young and inbreed. How old is she? Is she a first time mum? How old is her mate? Welcome to the forum.

 

PS. How many birds do you have in the aviary? I'd take out any 'spare' budgies as they could easily kill any chicks and attack the mum.

i have 4 birds and yes the hen is a first time mum. i am not sure how old the hen or the cock are. this is the first time she has layed eggs. also can budgies have chicks all year round or just specific months.

Budgies will have babies as long as they have somewhere to lay them and they are in the mood... Thats not necessarily what's good for them though... As others have already said, budgies will breed themselves to death if given the chance...

Also as mentioned.......you dont put new birds straight down to breed as they need settling in time, time for you to guage their health status and build them up prior to breeding and you may be putting birds down to breed that already have been bred almost to death. You also need to learn about breeding condition, age for breeding and quarantine and how you dont put new birds straight in with your others.

I am not a an of colony breeding, nor breeding budgies young. I know this sounds harsh, but it is something that I was forced to do oh so long ago. I think you need to remove all nestboxes and potential breeding opportune places immediately.

 

If that means throwing out eggs, so be it.

 

Do what it right for the birds now. They can breed again later. Right now, do what is right for the birds.

 

Obviously coming on here shows that you care and want to do what is right, so please, follow the advice offered. I am willing to be the tough one and say please remove the nestbox and throw the eggs out.

the birds are not that young ive had the hens for nearly two years and got the cocks about two months ago when they were already mature adults.

Dave Mcminn, my budgies are not young and my avairy is three metres long and a metre wide, there is at least a metre and a halves distance between the breding boxes.

How many breeding boxes do you have pride? are they all at the same level? Any chance of us seeing pictures of your setup?

i just have one big avairy so i didnt know they were going to pair up.

If there is nesting boxes in an aviary expect birds to pair up and eggs to be laid

And you have 4 birds right? 2 male 2 female? Most people would suggest, if your sure you want to colony breed, that you put in at least an extra 2 at the same height... Just saves heartache when both hens want the same nest box...

your actually ment to remove all birds not paired and laying to prevent any disturbance

how do you know your other hens not just dreaming of the day....she takes over the other hens box and kills chicks and possibly her from being jealous

not to break your hopes or anything

also if your hens old and your cocks young this may also be an issue

if hen is thin then you need to listen to dave and take eggs away and boxes she will kill herself or extra chicks to keep the amount she can feed alive or she will feed them and kill herslf doing so you will not see her wasting

you need to study and read and plan then breed

you havent listened to anything anyones said and still no pics im starting to think you really dont care about anything but getting chicks in which you wont be doing this time round by sounds even the repairing of box would have been to late thats if you even did as if your to scarred to desturbe hen to craddle eggs something you should of dont so hen not wasting time fading away for nothing

remove boxes eggs and rest hen for 6 months at least

fatten up with a range of seeds and veg and then

as your doing this find out all you need to know then try again when you do this then i will say good luck

Hey Pride. Seems you are in Perth too..like me. Where do you get your birds from ? as there are better places than others and it would be handy for you to know so you are buying better healthier birds.

 

One thing you will find from us here on BBC forum..............we have a sh*tload of good info to impart but sometimes due to that we have a tendency to overwhelm a new member with "helpful"advice that may seem pushy.

 

Believe me we all started where you are now and we all wish we knew then what we do now.

Bear with us, add some more info and pictures and you will get better help here than anywhere else you could turn to.

 

Hahaha! You're allowed to be blunt GB, thats the way you are. Nothing wrong with that. I just don't want pride running away from the one place that can help her should, and lets face it something always does, something go wrong. I'm yet to find an instance were breeding birds at some point was perfect and everything went the way it should. It may be little, or it may be big, but something always happens that you don't expect.

Kaz, i first got my birds about 4 years ago from birdworld but they died and i got the new budgies about a year and a half ago from a place called fish and bird place and i think its in bottle grove or something. my dad and brother are helping me breed. if the hen does not feed the chicks i will take other breeders advice and try to feed them myself. i want to breed budgies because i love animals, i look after my budgies very well.

Bird and fish place is in Wattle Grove. Remember for the future that Wattle Grove also has an excellent bird vet there called Tim Oldfield

 

If you ever need new birds ............show budgie breeders sell very good birds who dont quite make the grade re size or markings so you can buy better quality budgies when breeders cull their birds. Ask me anytime you are after birds and I will give you some contacts.

You have chosen the hardest way to try and breed birds by colony breeding. A hen that looks fine one minute watching the other hen nest can attack and try and take over the nest the second you arent watching. Broken eggs smashed eggs, killed chicks, killed mother who is protecting her nest.

You will learn along the way some better ways to go about things. Better for the birds and better for you.

Maybe sometime you would like to go to a budgie club meeting just to see whats its like. Most club meetings there are birds for sale......like there was at todays meeting.

If you buy and add any new birds........read up on quarantine and using that practice will save your existing birds from introduced illnesses.

If you are still in school, you wont be able to handraise the babies as they will need feeding around the clock.

cool thanks Kaz, i want to save up money for a couple of individual cages for breeding just like in setting up a breeding box forum, how much are they, i will ask for them for christmas presents if i cant save enough money by then.

 

i am really dedicated and grateful for the advice, i will do as much as i can to make my budgies happy. i bought a budgie from fish and bird place and he is really great, i can get him to perch on my finger, he is a beautiful cobalt.

You can buy whats called a flight cage which is around 60cms wide by 41cms by 41cms and they have a door for the nestbox usually at the side..................generally under $50 each. Or you go to the Avicultural Society meetings....Acton Tce Belmont.....last sunday of every month and you can buy wooden breeding cages there cheaper than that.

thanks for the info, i have about 90 dollars that i havent put in my bank so i might buy one of them, do mating pairs that you can buy have a better chance of chicks.
