Posted October 19, 201014 yr Im after a young budgie to train and to love. I know that the mother teaches them how to look for food etc. 1. How old should a chick be to SAFELY remove it from its mother? How many weeks old? 2. How much should i pay for a standard young budgie? I dont show budgies so i dont want anything fancy. Just want something cute.... What am i saying, they're ALL cute!!! How am i going to choose?!?!
October 19, 201014 yr Its not the mother that teaches them to look for food etc. Its the father. Dads are the primary feeders from age two weeks and it is the Dads that teach them to eat once they leave the nest. They need at least two weeks after leaving the nest to be sure they are eating alone and not supplemented by the father. That means around age 6-7 weeks. Edited October 19, 201014 yr by KAZ
October 19, 201014 yr Author Thanks KAZ! An awesome answer. How much do you think i should be paying? (So i dont get ripped off)...
October 19, 201014 yr If you're buying from a pet shop, then I wouldn't pay more than $30 - $35, but depending on where you are, you may be able to get one for around $15 - $25.
October 20, 201014 yr Author Awesome! I live in brisbane on the south side. I've been in contact with some of the Budgie Clubs around here and they are helping me get in contact with some breeders. Cant wait!
November 2, 201014 yr yeah dont pay any more than $40 for them but also dont just buy the cheapest you are also looking for quality.
November 2, 201014 yr Author Update: I got my little Felix for $30. Its weird to put a price on something i love so much! He's amazing! He was 6 weeks old on the 20.10.10 (At least i think its a he... He's too young to tell). He's really quiet, hardly makes a sound unless there are birds outside of he's infront of a mirror. But hes really tame and cute! Edited November 2, 201014 yr by Dibby&Ziggy
November 2, 201014 yr He was 6 weeks old on the 20.10.10 (At least i think its a he... He's too young to tell) Its never too young to tell. Only inexperienced people say they cant tell at that age. Many of us here can tell. I can sex baby budgies in the nest at age 3 days. Post a clear photo especially close up of the cere......natural light, no flash and we will tell you
November 3, 201014 yr Author Im still a noobie so i dont know how to sex them till they have a coloured cere. His cere looks more blue in these pics than in real life. I wouldnt be surprised if he was male and he doesnt bite like a female. He lets me scratch his head and noozle him with my nose. He's in my museli... Eating all the coconut, pumpkin and sunflower seads. He was so full after a big feast that he fell asleep ON the seed treat coz he couldn't be bothered moving... SO CUTE!

November 5, 201014 yr Real cutie, don't take it as gospel, I think they say if you want a bird to learn to talk etc. don't give it a mirror. Check this with others though! He look's right at home already.

November 5, 201014 yr Author Thanks for the tips guys. He's started making some noise other than to the other birds outside, but he only does it when hes behind my computer... Strange, I think he's a little shy. He only gets a mirror when its unavoidable. He's goes on my shoulder everywhere so sometimes he sees himself. Ill try and keep him away from the shiny surfaces
