Posted October 16, 201014 yr Hi New Budgie owner. Have noticed that my new budgie a baby is not eating is this normal when first entering a new home. Also is it a good idea to get a companion budgie. Thanks
October 16, 201014 yr How old is your budgie? Did you get him from a pet shop? Can you get this information from the breeder. Your budgie may not be weaned! How long have you had him? Try hand feeding him at once. He cannot go over a day without food.
October 16, 201014 yr It is normal for a new budgie to not move or eat for the first day or two. They are very insecure in their new surroundings. You should try covering 3 sides of the cage with a cloth so that it feels more secluded and sheltered. Also, clip some millet to the bars next to it's favorite perching spot, to make it easier for it to nibble, once it starts to get curious. It is up to you, whether you want to own one budgie or two. There are pros and cons to each. Budgies are very social, so they really do need a companion, but that companion can be you, if you have the time and are willing to give your bird a lot of attention. Single budgies can bond closely with their owner, which is a plus. Watching two budgies interact with each other can be very fun, but then they will usually bond with each other, instead of with you. It all depends on how much time you want to devote to them. If you are wanting a second budgie in order to get the first one to eat, that may or may not work. Then it would be best to get the second one from the same store/ cage as the first one. Otherwise you should ideally keep them separate from each other until quarantine is over, and then they would just be sitting like statues in their separate cages.
October 16, 201014 yr Author Looking a bit more lively this afternoon. So things are looking better. Don't know if is eating but at least is moving a bit more around cage. Keep you posted on progress.
October 16, 201014 yr Author Not so lively now. Just sits there... She looks bored, though there are lots of toys in the cage. I've covered the cage, put a treat in her 'perching spot' but she hasn't even looked at it... She sits sorta hunched, just stays there. I went out to purchase another budgie in hope she would become more lively, but they only have adult budgies at the pet shop now. I'll post tomorrow.
October 16, 201014 yr I wish I would have saw this topic before you went out and got another one I assume you did and put the budgie in the cage with her. It is always best to quarantine any new bird into your flock especially if you think your existing one is sick or even if it is healthy the new one can be sick. Quarantine is recommended for at least 30 days and that means a different cage, different room and always washing your hands before you interact with them. The best thing you can do is let your new bird settle in Finnie gave you some great advice. Another thing to see if they are eating is to blow lightly on their seed and if they empty husks fly off you know they are eating. Poop as mentioned is another good way to know if they are eating. It should be hard white droppings with black in the middle if it is runny it can be normal for a few days but if it is a real sloppy poop and all white or all black then your bird is sick and needs to one go back to the shop or two take it to an avian vet ASAP. Pretty my late budgie was a very quiet and insecure for a very long time in his cage and that is very commen for pet store budgies without a lot of human soclalization. Think about if someone plopped you into a new enviroment in a cage with no more friends it would be pretty scary. Single budgies are wonderful to have especially if you want them to bond with you. When you have 2 budgies and both are not tamed and bonded to humans you will have 2 birds that are beautiful, sing, and interact but only with each other.
October 17, 201014 yr Author There is some poo, but I'm pretty sure she's not eating, there's no seed shells in the feed or at the bottom of the page. And I didn't get another budgie, there were no baby ones. Thanks for your advice everyone :3 Edited October 17, 201014 yr by Ashuri
October 17, 201014 yr What color is the poo and I am glad you didn't get another one. How he is doing today?
October 18, 201014 yr Author She's eating now! All is good She likes the radio, she sings to it. Edited October 18, 201014 yr by KAZ
October 19, 201014 yr That's great news! A radio is a good idea, it blocks out the silence, which frightens them, because in the wild, silence only happenswhen there is a predator nearby.
October 20, 201014 yr That is wonderful to hear, the radio always helps, I always leave a radio on in my house when I leave not just for Merlin but for all my animals.
