Hello everyone.

I woudl like to get some rainbow chicks in my pet-type aviary, and I was just wondering what hen I would go about purchasing to achieve this in 1st generation (one pairing, chicks straight up). My understanding of a rainbow budgie is:

-Blue Series Yellowface Opaline Clearwing.

 

The cock bird I have is a YF II Sky Blue Opaline Spangle. Am I able to achieve this in first generation?

Unless your spangle cock is split for clearwing you can't get a rainbow from him in one generation. Also a rainbow does not have the spangle mutation so you would be better to start with a non spangle.

 

To produce rainbows it is necessary for the clearwing gene to come from both parents. A yellow face opaline blue cock that is split for clearwing mated to a clearwing hen would produce some rainbows

You most likely wont find it amongst show breeders as it is a composite bird not a bird show breeders in a club would be trying to breed. You need to find a pet breeder who dabbles in this or you need to create it yourself by buying in some breeding birds to create a rainbow in stages. It may take some time

So maybe if I bought a clearwing blue hen, breed some chicks and keep a yf blue cock bird (split clearwing) and maybe buy in another clearwing hen, and just dabble around with getting the right mutations in? I don't mind if it isn't "technically" a rainbow, just because I sell to petshops and privatley, and birds like rainbows are more likely to attract the eye.

if your not worryed about the tech bit then

a cinnamon opaline violet yf type 1 or dom pied yf op spangle violet or sky blue are quite nice

df australian golden face in same mutations and colour leaving out spangle also very nice

Kaz is right there! I would cringe at sticking different varieties into my clearwings. It's hard enough to keep them to show standard as it is! But if you can buy a couple of clearwings I suppose you are at least some of the way there. Ask John Mulley if he has any he might sell you.

I suppose you are right, even if I could just find some blue series clearwings that would be good.
