Posted September 23, 201014 yr Hi, I would like some help please to determine if my male and female are in breeding condition.... Im pretty sure the female is, but not 100% sure about the male... I was looking at this website as it has lots of different pics regarding breeding condition. http://www.birds-online.de/allgemein/geschlecht_en.htm The reason I'm unsure about my male is his cere doesnt look as dark blue all over like the pics at that website..... to me it seems a a blueish / purple colour ? ? Can you please have a look at my pics then compare them to the above website pics......... please advise about the female too. Also,,,, I have no idea exactly what varieities this male and female are so can please tell me that too.... If these 2 birds were to breed , what colour would the babies be ? Thank you, Jason This is him when i got him at 9 weeks old Now this is the female... it was hard to get a direct front picture of her,,,so hope you can tell This is their current cage Moderator’s Message Changed pls to please. September 24, 201014 yr The male is in breeding condition. The female may be just going out of breeding condition as her cere looks at the stage where its about to peel off and reveal the whitish blue underneath. How come the nestbox is there if you werent sure about the breeding condition ? How old are they ?

September 24, 201014 yr I say again......................... The female may be just going out of breeding condition as her cere looks at the stage where its about to peel off and reveal the whitish blue underneath. The females cere is at the stage where the brownish wrinkly part is about to peel off and reveal the whitish blue that indicates going out of condition. I suggest removing the nestbox and waiting.

I read that "Budgies only come into breeding condition certain times of the year. This seems to coincide with the Australian spring/summer " So if its spring now, and shes going out of condition, do you mean to wait until spring next year ? Im really confused now, as the breeder I bought her from told me she was in condition... Thanks
September 24, 201014 yr Many people get confused about breeding condition and a quick look at a brownish cere is most people indication that they are ready to breed. She has been ready but may be about to go out of condition. Just try her for a few weeks with no nestbox and try again after that. UNLESS she has shown signs of interest in the box or mating. I read that "Budgies only come into breeding condition certain times of the year. This seems to coincide with the Australian spring/summer " So if its spring now, and shes going out of condition, do you mean to wait until spring next year ? Budgies come into condition when all things are right..............health, food and interest related to the season. A budgie would breed all year round if they could and were in condition. We can affect them being in breeding condition by good food, good conditions and keeping them in good health. By the way........your breeding cage is very good

You then said try her without a nest box for a few weeks...... Does that mean it’s possible for her to go back into breeding condition in 3 or 4 weeks ? Also, what does removing the nest box actually do ? I will remove it,,,, but I’m just curious as to why you would need to remove ? Thanks jason
September 24, 201014 yr If you didn't remove it and she laid, the chances are that they will not be fertile, she won't sit or she won't raise her babies.

Removing the nestbox will stop her trying to start something she isnt in condition to finish. As Ratzy has said and I agree with If you didn't remove it and she laid, the chances are that they will not be fertile, she won't sit or she won't raise her babies.
September 24, 201014 yr Also,,,, I have no idea exactly what varieities this male and female are so can please tell me that too.... If these 2 birds were to breed , what colour would the babies be ? Thank you, Jason This is him when i got him at 9 weeks old Now this is the female... it was hard to get a direct front picture of her,,,so hope you can tell This is their current cage Based on the first couple of pictures of the cock, I thought he was a light green, maybe greywing. (I can't really see his bars in that view.) But then I saw his baby picture, so now I think he is probably a yellowface mutant 2, maybe in mauve. The very last picture of him in the cage makes me wonder if he might be clearwing, instead of greywing. But that's not really a good picture for identifying purposes. Would it be possible for you to get a whole body shot of him, a little closer, and with no flash? Plus, wait for the opinion of somebody who knows a lot more than me. The hen looks like a grey opaline, to me. Their babies will depend on whether the male is a yellowface or a green, and whether or not he is split to blue. But all the chicks will be split for the greywing/clearwing, whichever he is. (And if the hen is also split for it, you could get visual greywings.) All the boy chicks will be split for opaline, but you won't see any visual opalines unless the father is split for it. You can expect 50% of the chicks to have grey factor, unless the mother is a double factor grey, in which case all of the chicks will be grey-factored. They are very pretty birds. That cock sure was a cutie as a baby
September 24, 201014 yr To me the cock is also spangle and opaline. I may be wrong, but those cheekpatches look spangle.I'm not sure he is greywing, the opaline does fade the markings on the head. Having not seen the full wing up close, don't count on me! Edited September 24, 201014 yr by Ratzy

Having not seen the full wing up close, don't count on me! You have a good point, Ratzy, because I am always thinking those spangles look like clearwings from a distance! I think we need a picture of the back of the bird, so we can see his markings.
