Hi all

Does anyone have any good healthy easy homemade dog food recipes please.

The company that I was going to get Jakes food from does not deliver in my area, I had some friends lined up in Shepp to recieve it but today changed their mind just incase they might not be home when he arrives. So i have decided to make his food myself but I need it to heaqlthy for a growing puppy.

We cook for our dogs and freeze it in tubs.

We use 3 kilos of raw meat. ( we use kangaroo or a mix of beef and kangaroo ) ...some people use pet mince.

to that 3 kilos of meat we use 1.5 kilos of large macaroni, and a kilo pack of frozen mixed vegies.

We also add any extras from the fridge.

Put it in a large pot of around ten litres and add lots of water. Cook till it reaches stew consistency, stirring as the macaroni may stick a little.

This usually makes around 5-6 of the 2 litre icecream tubs and we freeze it.

Costs us about $3 an icecream tub. One icecream tub lasts our dogs three days for three dogs.

For one pup you are best putting serves in the ziplock bags and flatten it before freezing. If you flatten it out to freeze, it thaws quicker when you need it. You can wash out the ziplock bags and reuse them :rip:

What about vitamins like omegas etc and calcium ?

You arent meant to add extra calcium to a dog or pups diet unless by vet prescription. Vitamins are in meat and vegies. Some vitamins arent good cooked.

I also give my dogs egg flips..........raw egg in puppy milk with a spoon of cod liver oil....................twice a week.

Our dogs also eat raw apple, raw corn on the cob, raw carrots.

and I give them any of the clear budgie eggs..shell and all.

Thanks good to know, I give Jake a chook egg a couple of times a week.

I do you make anything else for variety as I was thinking of making something with chicken in it.

At the moment I have in on 4legs all natural dog food. He loves eat his head doesn't come out of the bowl until empty. I also started giving him pet mince raw as they say raw is best but he doesn't really like it much. So I cooked it up today but very fatty so I tpped all the fat out and then added an egg while it was still cooking, and then I added grated carrot and chopped parsley, 1/2 cup of quick oats and a 1/4 clove of garlic. I gave him a bit and boy did he down that.

I want to give him a variety so he doesn't get bored.

So I will give yours a go Kaz.

I think your natural instincts about food for Jake will be fine Splat. You seem to know what you are doing already :rip:

raw chicken carcass or chicken wings, or raw lamb offcuts bones and meat from the supermarket or butcher will take care of his teeth and calcium if you are worried about it.

What Kaz says I do up a big pot now and again with pasta and vegies and either homemade mince or mince from the butchers. Butchers mince here is $2-3 a bag and contains meat fat and liver etc. Puts the condition on my working dogs well. Other than that they get good quality bikkies and meat on the bone

I like to give pups lamb brisket or ribcage when teething, they use the front and rear teeth on them.

Sounds like Jake is on a good thing already though :rip:

Jake gets chicken necks, meaty rib bones to chew on. he has kinda gone off the chicken necks I think he prefers the 4leg all natural and my cooking. Everytime we give him his chicken necks he goes and buries them, can't be very hungry.

Today i made him doggy biscuits and I gave him one and he loved it. I also cooked up 2 different varieties of mince, 1 with beef mince, pasta, egg and veges with added garlic and parsely and the other the other beef mince, chicken livers, rice, veges and parsely. I froze the lot because he still has plenty in the fridge to get through yet. :rip:

I also cooked some chopped chicken livers in the oven until they are nearly dry and I give these to him when training him, he thinks they are alright ;)

Splat have a look at the BARF (bones and raw food) website (or information on BARF diets). Unfortunately many homemade diets are typically unbalanced for dogs and puppies.

If your puppy is getting puppy kibble of any sort calcium addition is not necessary but if your dog is on a meat only diet calcium is very necessary particularly in a still growing dog, but you can overdo it. Raw bones as suggested by others here will fill the calcium gap except for lactating bitches where you run the risk of milk fever if you don't supply extra calcium AFTER WHELPING NOT BEFORE - chicken necks (or frames for bigger dogs), brisket bones, lamb off cuts, ox tails etc are all good - never supply cooked bones.

For a younger pup be careful of over nutrition which can easily lead to OCD (not obsessive compulsive disorder but an over activity of the growth plates in the wrists causing long term changes and lameness arthritis) also if the breed is an at risk for hip displaysia (I'm assuming it's your cattle dog so not as much of a worry) then keeping them lean as a young dog is important. High levels of high protein food (meat etc) is a real issue here.

Stay clear of ONIONS. These cause anemia in dogs with sustained use. Eggs too are okay in small doses but should be cooked not fed raw. You can add fish oil (don't go nuts) to give coat shine but not essential.

Raw green leafy vegetables, carrots, different fruits all minced along with your dogs meat portion of food helps by supplying minerals like magnesium etc whilst bulking out the food, making your pup feel fuller and not relying on the very high value meat portion of the diet to feel full. Addition of frozen vegies can be helpful when in a pinch too.

Thanks Nubbly, yes he has dried food available all the time. He gets chicken necks, meaty rib bones etc, I wanted him to eat raw meat but he prefers it cooked. I know about onions garlic is the same but they have to have a lot to be dangerous. We never give dogs cooked bones as they are dangerous.

I am going to continue to give him 4 legs natural food for puppies along with my homemade food. There are added supplements in the 4legs for growing puppies. :D

My dogs have always had raw eggs......they eat budgie clear eggs with shell and every dog I have ever owned including when I bred dobermans In Tassie all had raw eggs. Raw egg with milk or milk substitute and cod liver oil served as a eggflip.

No side affects............and great for their coat. :D

I read somewhere that they reckon raw eggs can have salamella Spelt wrong) in them, but I find this ironic because dogs bury bones and dig them up a few days later YUK food poisoning for sure. So what is the difference.

I totally agree with you there Splat, and thats exactly the same argument I had with the vet when we had pups and Maggie needed extra feeding up :D

Raw eggs contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin). This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Salmonella is rarely an issue for dogs.

Thanks Nubbly didn't know that, so no raw eggs then

Every now and then is fine just not all the time or if so then preferably cooked which breaks down the enzyme.
