Quill Mites

Hi ,

I am trying to find some info on Quill mites.

I have one bird in my aviary who on both wings on the primary flight feathers chews the quills until he bleeds.

All my birds are treated for lice/mites as per the usuall but this one bird is causing me grief.

I have checked him again this morning and there is no sign of lice, all his feathers are clean except the ones that have blood from chewing. On the surface you can't see anything, no dirty colouration they are white (he is a clearflight dominent pied) and all the other birds are fine it's just this one bird.

I remember reading something on the forum last year that made me think that this is what it is but i am having trouble finding it.

Thanks,

Lib

Quill mites can be hard to be rid of. I bought in a bird that had quill mites and it took a long time to clear him of those. An avian vet can do a scraping of the contents of a feather quill and put it under the microscope.

Indicators of feather quill mites is seeing minute holes or cuts into the feather quill.

Quill mites can get into the bloodstream from what my vet told me and what I have heard.

Eventually the cure for my bird was ( vet prescribed ) spraying the bird to soaking point with Avian Insecticidal Liquidator and putting S76 in his water. Basically treating topically and internally. Then he was cleared of feather quill mites.

When you say it took along time are you meaning months or weeks?

Is this products A.I.L? and where do i get S76 from?

It's funny how ivermectin doesn't work being such a strong product.

It took months because I tried everything else............I even used ivermectin along the feather shafts and pulled the feathers after several days with ivermectin on. The thing is they get into the bloodstream.

It was the combination of the AIL and S76 that finally put paid to them coming back.

S76 is a vetafarm product.
