October 5, 201014 yr Great news, I think bubs are a bit quiet when they hatch because it's a big effort. They seem to pant a bit and lay quiet for a while, I actually got a bit on video yesterday of mine hatching, nearly missed it, it kicked off the shell and then lay there panting for a while then wriggled in among the other four, Mum even came into box and kicked out shell while I had lid off, and I got some dirty looks as well.
October 5, 201014 yr Author Thanks guys. Can't wait to get home today to check their progress and to see if there's another new arrival!
October 5, 201014 yr Author Well everything was fine when I got home, but I found the oldest chick dead this morning. It appeared healthy, then I noticed a tear on one of it's legs. To me it doesn't appear as though this chick was attacked, but I may be wrong. I inspected the other chick very closely and it is fine. My thoughts as to why this may have occured are that the chick: - Had a deformity - Was trodden on by the cock (he's always in the nestbox) and/or the nest box is too small - Was nipped by the hen or the cock I haven't done anything except remove the dead chick. I am wondering whether I should: - Remove the cock - Change the nestbox (I made bigger one's to the specs on this site) Any help would be appreciated.
October 5, 201014 yr Author I've posted this under Breeding Help: http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=29663 so please reply there thanks.
October 6, 201014 yr Author Thanks Rachelm. After yesterday, I was half expecting to find the second chick dead this morning, but I was very happy to see that its still going strong. Maybe I'm pushing my luck, but I'm also hoping for another hatchling this afternoon!
October 7, 201014 yr Author I now have another chick and it's much bigger than the first two. Both chicks are doing really well and I'm hoping for another one today or tomorrow.
October 11, 201014 yr Author Another chick arrived yesterday and all three had full crops and were healthy this morning. I attempted to put my first ring on on Saturday, which took some effort (I didn't want to hurt the poor little thing!). Getting it over that shortest back toe is difficult! The chick was only 5 days old, so I believe that's a good sign, as I might have a good sized chick - unluess it was my inexperience! Anyway, I checked later that afternoon and the ring had come off. So I put it back on again yesterday and it was still on this morning. All appears to be going well and hopefully there'll be another chick tomorrow.
October 13, 201014 yr Author Another chick arrived a couple of days ago. The oldest and second oldest chicks are both ringed and have dark blue/purple coloured feathers coming through on their wings. So the dark green cock appears to be split blue. I'll get some photos up shortly.
October 14, 201014 yr Hi, do you now have 3 or 4 chicks? If 4 then all your eggs were fertile I think? Bad luck with first bubs but looking good now it seems.
October 14, 201014 yr Author Robyn - I had 6 eggs, 5 fertile, then lost one chick so I now have 4. Ran out of time this morning to take photos as our dog had 2 paralysis ticks - one is her ear and one on her bottom eyelid. Got them out okay though. She had one last year and we ended up having to spent $$$ for anti-venom - bast&*d things!

October 15, 201014 yr Author Thanks Sunnie - hopefully she's okay when I get home. Sometimes the poison kicks in after you pull the ticks out. They start panting heavily and get a bit wobbly in the back legs. Edited October 15, 201014 yr by The Black Doctor
October 15, 201014 yr Author Took some pics this morning of the chicks. I think the oldest is a cock bird, but it's my first attempt at sexing a chick at this age, so feel free to shoot me down! I also think the two eldest chicks are blue series, but once again any advice would be appreciated! I cleaned out the nesting box and put some oats (I think there the instant ones so I'll check and see if they're okay), some seed and millet in there. Here we go... By the way - my dogs fine, running around like a lunatic!
October 19, 201014 yr Hi Glad your dog is o.k. I'm not up with sexing birds until they are at least, say 6mths, l.o.l. but it looks like you could have some white flights coming so maybe favouring Mum? Not to be picky, your third picture, chicks claws were pretty "gunky" if you can gently clean them off so it doesn't affect it's claws for perching etc. they can lose nails if they not cleared. October 19, 201014 yr Author Thanks Robyn - someone mentioned the same thing re: the gunky feet - all good now!
