Hey, my name is Lisa and I'm 19 from Australia. I have four budgies, two separate cages - one for each pair. I have an adult pair and a young pair.

And this is my young pair, Bonnie and B.F.G (Big Friendly Giant). I still can't tell if they're male or female lol.

 

I've seen a few of the posts on this site, and thought I would join up because it's a friendly environment with great answers to some questions. I also think my adult pair are in the stage of nearly breeding, so it would be good to browse some answers about that here. :)

please just read read read then breed save lots of time understanding the whole process before breeding cheak out kaz post on are you really ready to breed budgies or something like that its called

as theirs way more to it than just adding a box im sure you know that but many dont seem too :)

Yeah, I have no idea on how to breed budgies lol, they're just getting "too" close now so I should prepare for when they decide to lay eggs lol. What's the first step to take?

the first step is to read up and find out how to breed them their are lots of threads and you can always pm a member for extra knowledge id be happy to chat

do not add a box as just as they are mateing does not mean they will lay eggs

let them mate untill you know exactly whats its all about

no nest no breeding

get a book from library on breeding budgies and have money behind you its not cheep

I bought the adult pair as "adult pair" at the pet shop. I had a budgie before them for ten years - it died of age. I taught it to talk and do tricks. I really wanted to get adult budgies, not for breeding purposes, but because I thought they would learn stuff quicker, but it seems the young budgies I own are doing better.

Do not take that for the gospel truth. pet shops notoriously get it wrong. Coloured ceres yes................but not ADULTS.

Budgies are adults at 6 months. You do not know their exact age. They could be 6 months, or 6 years. In the wild, they are able to breed at 3 months. If they have any rings you will be able to work out their ages.

Budgies are NOT adults at six months Ratzy :o

 

PS I do find the advice you just gave a little irresponsible and can be easily misinterpreted to mean breed at under 12 months. Please think before posting such advice. :sadsorry:

Hi Im new to this also and your budgies are lovely,,I found that reading alot of books has help me initially and this site is excellent as well (thats why i joined it too), my two favourite books are Beginners guide to Buderigars by Paradise Press and The complete book of budgerigars by John Scoble. In my first clutch my budgie pair had three babies and they are now having their second clutch (5 at the moment). There is nothing better than seeing how budgies come into the world from egg to fledgling stage,,I have purchased an aviary as my budgies are producing alot! I think after this clutch though it will be rest time for the hot summer months here where I live... All the best :wacko:
