Posted September 9, 201014 yr A friend of mine recently got given a pair of male budgies ( four months ago ) from the school. I helped educate her on what a budgie actually needs diet wise and quarantine, and, though I think she got bored listening to me drone on , she listened. Anyway, a couple of months later she got given a breeding pair from a breeder for her to breed . She listened to me and what I said about quarantine. Anyway, she took them all to her vet ( not in the same car ). The vet put all of her budgies in TOGETHER. This was about a week into quarantine. She thought nothing of it, because the VET knew better. And now what does she find? For a week the two males have been puffed up and listless. Then she found one dead. She took the other to the vet, which I am concerned about as she isn't an avian vet. She thinks all will be well because they have gone to a vet, so she is getting 2 more birds. I hope she remembers what I said about quarantine. AND she is STILL planning on breeding her birds! I have offered on taking in the other male, but I doubt my parents would let me. She is going to write all their symptoms down to relate to you guys. She is desperate and so am I. When the school was getting rid of those budgies, I offered to take them but my friend got there first. Thanks in advance, I really need your help! I'm going to print off some disease sheets and quarantine proceedures for her.
September 9, 201014 yr I can't help you with much but maybe you could refer her to this website so she can see all the information we have to offer I hope things work out for her
September 9, 201014 yr Author Yes, I have. Only it's blocked on her home computer for some reason. She thought ( before I corrected her ) that it was because she gave them carrot.
September 9, 201014 yr Yes, I have. Only it's blocked on her home computer for some reason. She thought ( before I corrected her ) that it was because she gave them carrot. We have a filter on our computer to block inappropriate sites. But if it blocks something we want to see, we (the parents with the password) can go in and add the site to the "allowed sites" list, and then it is not blocked anymore. Maybe your friend can ask her parents to get BBC "allowed", if she is planning to breed budgies. If her parents are supportive of this endeavor, maybe they will agree that it would be good for her to have the support and encouragement she can find here.
September 10, 201014 yr Author UPDATE: The vet found a piece of newpaper down the bird's ( dead ) 'throat'. A vet calls it a throat, not crop?! It was the crop, they had pictutres. Apparently that is what caused it!? My birds chew on newspaper all the time ( non-toxic )! Also, the birds were fluffed up because they were cold? They were inside! I'm not sure, but this vet doesn't sound like she knows exactly what she is talking about.
September 10, 201014 yr Sorry to hear about your friends birds. It must be frustrating for her when she is trying to do all the right things.
September 10, 201014 yr Author She thinks her birds are 'fine' now because the vet said. She is getting mroe birds and probably won't quarantine because the vet knew better and put her birds together so it must be all right.
September 10, 201014 yr Ratzy, just keep reinforcing what she should be doing and be a good friend if things go wrong for her with the new birds. Unfortunately it sometimes takes something to go wrong before important lessons are learnt. Your trying and thats all you can do at this stage...
