Posted September 9, 201014 yr This needs to be super quick as i need to do about 20 things before i'm due at work in 40mins.. I posted a while ago about a budgie that flew off and left the hen on her eggs.. This is in my avairy. She ended up laying another 2 the day he flew off.. I looked at them after about 6 days then were brownish so i didn't think they were fertile... Last Sun i think an egg was due to hatch so checked every day until tues when nothing had hatched. Decided to check the eggs for fertility as didnt want her stuck on eggs if they wern't fertile. Well i checked all 5 (with a pen light) and they all were red with veins So much to my shock they were all fertile. Since then 2 have hatched 1 yesterday and 1 the day before I have been putting seed IN her box as advised by Kaz so mum is doing really well and i clean it every 2nd day/replace with seed. Tonight went in to take out vegies i put in this morning and i saw an egg on the ground near the door almost. Being a large avairy i don't understand how it got there!! I picked it up hoping just to find an empty egg . But there was a baby in there i swear i felt it move so i held it for a little longer and saw a wing poke out the crack that had formed on the egg... So i decided to put the egg back in the nest. Was this the right thing? Also this is the bit that saddens me the most when i was leaving the cage i saw a mouse stuck head first in the wire.. This cages sqaure "openings" are about 5cm 3x3 how is this possible!! Was it the mouse that took the egg!!?? How do i stop mice getting in in the future!! I also have a breeding cabinet and another budgie cagew with 2 youngens on my deck near my back doorr. How do i protect these ones!!.. Mouse traps is the obvious idea but i have a dog and a cat that are also outside and curious!! I will check via my phone tonight for any answers and will do anything i can first thing when i get home (at 10pm) or in the morning TIA
September 9, 201014 yr This cages sqaure "openings" are about 5cm 3x3 5 cms is 2 inches in the old terms ...............are you sure about that ??Regards aviary mesh........never have it going down to ground level as they can walk striaght through if its 10mm or more diameter. No soil floors or they dig and tunnel in and even live in tunnels in the dirt floor. The ones on the back verandah arent safe at all ...............anything on the verandah needs to be up on legs like on a table with chrome legs that mice cant run up.....AND away from the wall as mice can run up and all over brick walls.

Blood usually means an early hatching. You will need to check, but if you get home in the dark......check in the morning.
