April 4, 201114 yr I am so looking forward to seeing all the pictures. Rarely are things as I picture them, so I am dying to see what your breeding room looks like.
April 4, 201114 yr Author Sorry no pics yet, ran into problems today, the old cabinet for the wire cages wouldn't go back together the way it was in the old birdroom so I spent heaps of time on it, drove me nuts. BUT saying that the wire cages are in and ready to go and most of the perches are in the wooden cages. We moved the mitre saw into the old birdroom and of course I had to clean all the mice poop in there first what a mess. I brought the feed storage bins to the front end of the old birdroom (the first half) so it is up the end where my new shed is, easy to get to. I put more shelves in the $4. cupboard and Greg helped me bring in the large baby cage. Doing all this I also had to drive to Mooroopna to do Geoffs (clearwing) birds. That took around 3 hours with travel. Yes very busy Finnie, I am actually washed out, really over it all, had enough. Dave will try and take photos tomorrow. I can put the birds in now but I have to wait until next week to get the materials for the wire door. I really don't feel comfortable putting them in with out it. But I will see how I go tomorrow. It is looking really good though, really happy with it.
April 5, 201114 yr Author Some photos of the bird room just for you Dave. my $4.00 pantry. Still want to put in another couple of shelves.  My old wooden breeding cages, they are painted cream and they are staying like that because I can't be bothered painting them white, not this year anyway. There are 12 and I am debating on putting 4 more on top.  Above the breeding cages are the old show boxes for training.  the wire cages , there are 7 need 2 more yet.  The ceiling, there will be a fluo light there in time  My other cupboard that needs painting, with the large baby cage on top.  The wire on the window I did today, and I also put wire on the bottom of the door so mice can't get in.  There is room for 6 more breeding cages on the other wall.  More photos when completed. I hope you all liked.
April 5, 201114 yr Author Thanks Kaz, it will be great once up and going, having trouble doing the frame for the wire door. Every bit of this birdroom has been done solely by me except for putting the walls up, I told Greg I was having trouble but I guess it is up to me to work it out so hard. I still need to redo the nest box, haven't time to make new ones, so I am just going to cover the side hole and make new ones in the front for this year and make new ones next year.
April 5, 201114 yr Re frame for the wire door. If its a stock standard size door you may find a real cheap flyscreen door at a salvage yard or recycle at the tip and then all you do is take off the flyscreen stuff and add aviary mesh and put it on as a second door. I did it for my old first ever birdroom.
April 5, 201114 yr Author No Kaz it is not standard, wish it was because I would by a security door. The door is 198 high x 75 wide. But that's not my problem, I have to make a frame inside the shed to hang the door. Nothing is working. As for the door I am using 25mm alum and connectors with mouse proof wire. The 1st 3 feet will be tin so mice can't climb in and the rest will be wire. But when I made the frame for the shed, the timber each side of the door is on a lean silly me. So it is making it hard to frame it.
April 6, 201114 yr  But when I made the frame for the shed, the timber each side of the door is on a lean silly me. So it is making it hard to frame it. You will need to fix that before you proceed with the door.
April 6, 201114 yr Author Yes I know but I don't know how to. So now I am thinking on screwing the wood front part of the lining, at least it is square, I think. Kochy I really am not sure how to pack it as the bottom is at least an inch out from the top. I have nailed 100mm nails in the wood and now I can't get them out so now I have to go buy more wood next week to do it. I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.Even having trouble putting the nest boxes on because some of my wire fronts are weird. Everything is getting me down now, birds are going into a moult, I really think I have missed my opportunity this round, will probably have to wait until they moult now. April 6, 201114 yr Wish I were there to help you Splat. Sounds like you need it and it's a shame your partner can't/wont help you. Apart from that, it sounds like things are coming together for you  I am so looking forward to the end result! Best of luck
April 7, 201114 yr Author Thanks Amy, yep some help would be great. Today I got the jimmy thing and managed to pull those 100mm nails out of the wood. What a hard job that was. I then nailed one side on the wall and I am pretty sure it's straight, I used the level thing, tomorrow I will do the other side after I buy some more nails. But it is coming together. I am having trouble putting the nest on, turning out to be a pain in the behind. the hooks won't hook around the wire frames. need to look at new type hooks tomorrow.
April 7, 201114 yr its a real pity that i am not over there or i could show you, the simplest why i can think of explaining it would be to say if the bottom is say 25mm out from the top you would rip down a piece of timber 25mm to 0mm over the distance of the bottom to top if that makes any sense then your door frame would be plumb, of course that may mean you might need a new door to fit your new opening size cause it could alter it. im not sure if you have or not but could you post a picture up of the opening with some indication of how far its out?
April 8, 201114 yr Author Thanks Kochy, I will see what I can do for a photo on Monday, Have to work both days over the weekend.
April 19, 201114 yr Author Update on Birdroom, photos tomorrrow hopefully. Â I have made the wire door, and it is up and running, birds are in the cages, not breeding just holding. I still have tools all over the floor though, so it is still a mess. Â The wire door, I bought the 25mm Alum square tubing and the connector joints but guess what I ran into a huge problem. I bought the connector joints from Bunnings and the alum from Hunters because It was 6.5 meters for $35.00 and Bunnings was 3 mts for $25.00 bUT what I didn't relise was that the one from Hunters was thicker inside than the one from Bunnings, so the connectors were to big to fit.. What a headache, So rather than waste $70.00 dollars I had to shave every connector joint back so it would fit in the tubing. Some of them turned out a bit thiner than others so then once I made the frame I had to put a screw in each connector and alum tubing to keep it stable. It was a huge job and I did it all by myself but it all worked out good. I am actually very happy with door. And I think the birds are delighted too because now it is much brighter in there. I still have the problem of put a handle on and a snip. I bought the snip today, actually a bolt thing and it is wider than the tubing where the screws go in so now I need to work that out tomorrow. Â I adventually worked out how to make the door frame of the shed square thank god and all that is now great. Â I will take some photos of the door and frame and set up tomorrow. At this stage I have 9 nine wire cages and 12 wooden cages to use. I am thinking of putting some holding cages on the other wall yet but I am not sure. I want some room to move about.
April 19, 201114 yr Wow, Splat, I'm always impressed by the things you manage to accomplish by yourself. It's very encouraging to me, because there are a lot of things around here that I sometimes have to do by myself, and I don't always think I can do it. Great job!
April 19, 201114 yr Author Thanks Finnie, It's hard being a female sometimes when it comes to building but then I think I am better than Greg now lol, more particular, no slap up job when I'm around. lol. When I can't do something I quit for the day and go inside and think about it, think about all the solutions and eventually I work it out and when I can't I get Greg to help. BUT then I have to wait for him to do it so then I get annoyed and end up doing it myself. I din't realise how clever I was until I started doing this birdroom, I have always left the hard things for the guys to do. BUT female power is HARD TO BEAT lol Edited April 20, 201114 yr by **KAZ**
April 26, 201114 yr Author Hi all, I got around to taking a couple photos of my wire door that i made. Out side view... Inside view... I love it... it is the best thing since sliced bread and NO gaps for mice to get through and it lets in plenty of light. I open it in the morning and it stays open all day. I can even lock it because I used one of those T handles. Â I also took some photos of the birds in the cages. Tomorrow Greg and I are changing the cages around a bit because I can't get the trays out of the end wire cages for cleaning so we are moving the wooden ones to the right hand side wall. Which will be better any way.
April 26, 201114 yr Well done with the door. It looks great   If you turned the cage front upside down you wouldnt have to have cut any bars off your cages  Â
April 27, 201114 yr Great door, well done. I have the same wire cages and have done the same as splat. Didn't know you could do that Kaz, silly me lol.
April 27, 201114 yr Author I did that last year Kaz, turned the main door upside down and I ended up cutting a bar off each side of the small door so I good get the jars in easier, wish I didn't do that now. But I find the door up the right way much easier. One thing I am doing this year and I have done about 5 cages so far, I am taking off the wire on the bottom and putting on the very bottom because I am sick on them emptying their jars out, I am finding that much better, you can see in the photos that i have done some. I have always hated that wire on the bottom. the birds are making less mess now too.
April 27, 201114 yr But I find the door up the right way much easier. The main door on mine is the right way up Edited April 27, 201114 yr by **KAZ**
April 27, 201114 yr Author I had mine the same last year Kaz and I use a cable tie to keep the big door secure, so that left the small door for use only. I put them back this year because I prefer to use the big door and have it sliding. So that meant cutting out the wire for the nest but all is good because I have lots of little doors to put on where the holes have been cut.
May 3, 201114 yr But the problem is i have put my shoulder and neck out, had it fixed Thursday but out again. Couldn't even lift the drill yesterday and the pain is unbearable. So I think my building has come to a stand still for a while. Sad. Â Sounds really bad! I hope you get better soon, Splat. Edited May 3, 201114 yr by **KAZ**
