Posted September 4, 201014 yr Hey guys. Checked my boxes a couple days ago, and found this chick. I am not sure if it was fed or not, the hen is a maiden. I am just wondering if this poor chick died of hunger, or does it look like yellow bellow (dead as hatchling) Natrual: Torchlight: Flash:
September 4, 201014 yr Might have been an early hatching Squeak. Some hens open the eggs and a chick arrives too soon that way with a yellow belly. Can also get a yellow belly a day or so after hatching due to an infection. Yours looks like possibly an early hatching and especially based on what you said about a maiden hen. Plum eyes too.........cinnamon or recessive ? Heres a yellow belly photo of mine also an early hatch Edited September 4, 201014 yr by KAZ
September 4, 201014 yr Author The egg was a day early I think about 17 days. Most my chicks hatch between 18-20 days. Cinnamon or recessive, it would have been cinnamon I think. It was in my colony breeding, I havent been out in a few days to look in the boxes as it is revolting weather. I think I will need to check later on tonight though, rain seems to be holding off a bit. Thanks Kaz, I hope I don't get more in the clutch. It looks like your chick, so I am kind of glad it was yellow belly and not mum ignoring/not feeding chick.
September 4, 201014 yr It looks like yellow belly to me, if you loose anymore treat the parents with an broadspectrum antibiotic, I use moxti T.

September 4, 201014 yr Author Thanks guys. Life is about learning and I will be sure to get some moxti T or Triple C in. I finally got out to the aviary, the hen doesnt have any more chicks but another nest has another dead chick. I haven't taken it out yet, so I don't know if it has yellow belly.
September 4, 201014 yr I lost 7 chicks in one week from 3 different nest (yellow belly) so I treated the effected nest with MoxiT and no more died.
September 4, 201014 yr Without even seeing Kaz's post I would have said it looks to me like early-hatch type yellow belly. Too soon. I've had that happen in cases where a chick has STARTED pecking the egg, and as soon as it makes the first hole the hen has seen it and started helping the chick out by enlarging the hole, eating the shell and releasing the chick.. Yolk wasnt absorbed - chick had just started pecking out, died soon after. This was a very very reliable hen, super feeder. She was just a bit TOO helpful that time.

If this was cabinet breeding you would be checking more often and rain would not have entered into the picture Edited September 5, 201014 yr by KAZ

I am sure if you saw our place now though, you would agree. I wore gumboots out there today to check, even then I got wet to the skin. . Has been raining again today, showing no chances of stopping, but I had to check on the birds. But, No more chicks in that nest hatched, but the other nest had one dead chick. It doesnt look like yellow belly, I think it may not have been fed. The other two chicks got there beaks cleaned, and their nails (the hen keeps a very messy nest). I am lucky enough for that aviary not to have water in it, but I waded through a stream to get to it lol.

It didn't have yellow belly, and neither did the one this day. I am not sure why the first one died, it had a full crop and was perfectly healthy. It is only the two hens in there, and both chicks have been getting full crops. The nests get checked befroe I go to school and when I come home, plus watching them most the time.

September 5, 201014 yr It seems you have chicks that died from not being fed but then you said had full crops. This is sometimes called " covering your a$$ " as you would not want to appear inadequate in any way. BUT I am going to say what I will and come what may................. I have said many times regarding colony breeding and how I feel about it. I dont think you should have put any pairs down to colony breeding unless you were at home 24/7. You say you check morning and night, but you have already said the opposite of that I havent been out in a few days to look in the boxes as it is revolting weather and the other nest had one dead chick. It doesnt look like yellow belly, I think it may not have been fed. and I am not sure why the first one died, it had a full crop and was perfectly healthy. Now................in colony breeding sometimes other birds will stop a mother or father from going to their own nest to feed their chicks. This results in dead chicks, whether its not being fed or being cold because the parents are stopped from returning to the nest and keeping their chicks warm at night. I suggest if you want to colony breed you must be home all day to watch and care for them and circumvent any things that go wrong. You go to school and maybe just maybe check morning and night ( although you have admitted to not doing that due to weather ? or busy ? ) You defend colony breeding but you have not gone the extra steps to protect the heirarchy in there and to check more often once you had chicks.

September 6, 201014 yr Author The closest brown one. Only near the door got wet. I have started the birds on coccivet of 15ml to 10L for 5 days.
