I agree :emoticon112:

I'm happy for both of you that your hens are better! And especially that Kaz did not put hers down when she might have done. (Now if only there was an emoticon for "Whew! That was close!")

kaz would only do that if bird was in pain this hen was not in pain their for as it was eatting drinking pooing fine she would have persisted in finding a solution

unless bird deteriorated or was in pain im sure of that however their is a limit of time a bird can be in this state before it needs to be put down

True............my hen looked perfectly happy sitting there, and thats why I didnt euthanase, besides the fact she was a hen I was extrememly fond of. The vet I used to work for always said to me you dont give up on an animal until it has given up on itself...........

So I looked for other answers.

Well my girl is going so well I have put her in the kindy cage with 2 other chicks, the cage is inside so I can keep a close eye on her..... :sadsorry:

Great news all round. It also highlights the fact not to rely on cuttle bone etc alone. As with the iodine, we don"t know which birds are eating it. Great lesson for us all, thank's for the post. Hope birds keep improving.

I dont rely on cuttlebone at all. Birds play with it more than ingest it. There are better sources of calcium than cuttlebone.

As a long term plan Kaz, how often should I supplement calcium....like once a week, once a month????

Well... it always seems to go this way with me..... :)

I got home from work and my girl was at the bottom of the cage, not using her right leg at all...... she is alive but struggling I think.....

I'm guessing he is the author of one of my favourite colour genetics books "A Guide to Colour Mutations & Genetics in Parrots". edit - meaning Dr Terry Martin.

Oops Sorry Anne - as usual I didn't realize I wasn't on the last page - doh!

Hoping your hen recovers.

My girl has been put to sleep....

It was not a fracture or break that he could feel, the only way to know for sure is xrays etc.....He believed it was an underlying tumor effecting nerves, because she had some swelling on her back and no feeling in her leg at all, I trust him 100%, so it was decided that she be put to sleep.....I feel like a total tosser, I burst into tears....she was a special hen....

He is a very gentle caring man and he only charged me for the euthanasia, not the consult...We bought her home and I will bury her in my backyard near the avairy.

Rest in peace sweet "Tiger Lady".... ;) I'm sorry I could'nt fix you....

Nubbly...Yes it's the same Terry Martin, the book is on display in his surgery....
