September 5, 201014 yr It is now 8:48am for you Kaz. What is the verdict? Sorry.......starting to look like a thread hijack here... :nest: ....but here's my hen today right side was the affected side. Still not brilliant, but it is getting better.

That was close!") kaz would only do that if bird was in pain this hen was not in pain their for as it was eatting drinking pooing fine she would have persisted in finding a solution unless bird deteriorated or was in pain im sure of that however their is a limit of time a bird can be in this state before it needs to be put down

The vet I used to work for always said to me you dont give up on an animal until it has given up on itself........... So I looked for other answers.
September 6, 201014 yr I also do not think that this is a thread hijack. Both birds have the same issues, so what we say for one bird actually applies to the other as well. Pleased that both birds are on the mend (since I originally named Thundra I feel a special closeness to her)
September 7, 201014 yr Author Well my girl is going so well I have put her in the kindy cage with 2 other chicks, the cage is inside so I can keep a close eye on her..... :sadsorry:
September 8, 201014 yr Great news all round. It also highlights the fact not to rely on cuttle bone etc alone. As with the iodine, we don"t know which birds are eating it. Great lesson for us all, thank's for the post. Hope birds keep improving.

There are better sources of calcium than cuttlebone.

September 11, 201014 yr Author My girl has been put to sleep.... It was not a fracture or break that he could feel, the only way to know for sure is xrays etc.....He believed it was an underlying tumor effecting nerves, because she had some swelling on her back and no feeling in her leg at all, I trust him 100%, so it was decided that she be put to sleep.....I feel like a total tosser, I burst into tears....she was a special hen.... He is a very gentle caring man and he only charged me for the euthanasia, not the consult...We bought her home and I will bury her in my backyard near the avairy. Rest in peace sweet "Tiger Lady".... I'm sorry I could'nt fix you.... Nubbly...Yes it's the same Terry Martin, the book is on display in his surgery....
