Leaving The Nest Early

Featured Replies

Hi I have a baby that has left the nest too early , I don'tknow if the parents are sending them out of the nest too early or what , this is the second time it has happened with these 2 birds I lost one bird today but I want to keep the other if I can save it , these are the only 2 birds that I have on the nest at this time , the baby is about 4-6 weeks old .

What can I do.

Ross

Most babies leave the nest at age 4-6 weeks. Too early would be considered not fully feathered. If not fully feathered I put mine back. Sometimes they end up out of the nest when reaching for Mum and Dad to feed them from the nestbox hole and they slip out. Sometimes the Mum boots them out to lay the next clutch. Sometimes they fall out if the nestbox hole is to low.

The feathers are not fully developed yet .

Then they need to go back.

PS Budgie babies are fully feathered at four weeks.

Thanks Kaz I put them back when I found them but I hope they stay in there.

Ross, I put my chicks back when I find them out of the nest , even when they are older. I only stop putting them back when I know for sure they are coming out of their own and not falling out. If I work out the hen is doing it because she wants to lay again I will put them on the floor with a little hidy area for them for protection. normally the dad will tend to them. Good luck with your last little chick, I hope it makes it. :) Just keep putting it back in the nest.
