Question Regarding Chick

Featured Replies

Posted

We were handling the chicks today. We noticed on the middle chick, that it had a lighter part of skin on it's head, the rest of the chick was darker and purplish. The spot is pink. We are curious, we will post a picture of it tomorrow, if we can get it lol.

sorry if it appears blurry, It was too curious, looking around at everything, lol

Pied spot. Could mean its a pied, or split for recessive pied. Or sometimes they just show up im told. Normal :D

Thanks Dean, It is the only one of the three to have that spot. Father is a single factor violet. His Dad was a violet and Mum was white. Do not know what Hedwig's parentage is, the curse of buying from pet shop. she is white all over with either a mauve or violet suffusion, starts about halfway down her chest and she has mauve on the back between the wings.

Mum was white
.......... Red eyes or not ?????

This one sounds like a lightly marked recessive pied and if so would explain the chick with the spot on its head. Or she could be DF dom pied. Can you post pictures of this one.

Hey Dean,

I checked Dad's head, when he would sit still lol. There is no spot on his head. There is no ring around Mother's eyes. The Dad has a ring around his. I just took the chicks out of the box and handled them. The oldest one has violet on the end of what tail it has lol. It's starting to bite more and squawked at me for holding it, which sent Mother into wigged out mode lol.

cant see the picture need new one close of mom please

she sounds like a df spangled pied though but thats a wild guess  i could tell with a good picture

Curious question, given one of the young obviously has a pied spot. Does that mean Kramer is split recessive pied??? We never got to see the parents  . We called up a bloke who had an ad in the paper, he said he had one that was purple, so that's how we got him. He only said the male was a violet and the hen was white. We gave him the name Kramer, from some of his antics ,reminded us of the Seinfeld Character lol. We will try for a better pics of Hedwig.

I would say the hen is a recessive Pied as you said she has no ring aound the eye.

Here is Hedwig. It took us about a million shots, most blurry. She would not sit still for a frontal shot. Everytime the camera would come up she would turn her back on it. Everytime. This was the best picture we could garner. Sheesh, the chicks were alot easier to get pics, rofl.

Oh, she is beautiful!!

Are her wing markings cinnamon? It's hard to tell on my monitor, but she reminds me of my violet cinnamon recessive pied hen, Alaina. (Except I just wish my Alaina's flight feathers and tail would grow in as nicely as Hedwigs!)

She looks like she could be SF spangle, and also, her flights and tail are clear, so if she is recessive pied, I would guess that she has some other kind of pied going on there, as well. But then again, I'm only guessing, because I'm really terrible when it comes to recognizing the different pieds. :mallet:

But I do know, if she is a recessive pied, then all her babies will be split for it.

(Did I mention she was beautiful? )

she is pretty, and agree that she looks recessive pied, and spangle

looking at the picture of the chick i can see the two clear pins for the tail feathers which is a sign for spangle

We were looking for a mate for Kramer, as we were told by a "self proclaimed expert" of a neighbour that Jessie was a male. Turned out he was wrong, as Jessie's cere turned brown and she is now sitting on one egg at the moment, lol. We spotted Hedwig in the pet shop, We were going to originally get her later that week, but the pet shop would not hold her for us. So we managed to scrape up 30 bucks for her. We quarantined her and introduced her to Kramer. She is my wife's favourite of the Budgies. I have a hard time picking a favourite. We try to look for unique coloured ones. I am very grateful that Hedwig was available that day. Still on the look out for a opaline violet, lol.

I was wondering with Hedwig, could she also be cinnamon grey, I know that is for another area, she has light grey around her head and cinnamon on the wings

My thoughts on her mutation are:

Cinnamon Violet Recessive Pied Hen maybe spangle. I have a hen like her that is blue instead of violet, but I am hoping to get some violets from the clutch as the dad is one. All of Hedwig and Kramers chicks will be split for pied, and the cock birds will be split cinnamon and the hens visual cinnamon. (That is if the cock and hen aren't split anything)

I am taking all this in,lol. Everytime something new comes up in this thread, my wife adds it to the list, lol. I thought the hens would only be visual cinnamon if kramer was a split cinnamon. Ashame, we don't know the parentage of Hedwig. Just only know that Kramer's dad was violet and the mother white. Nothing regarding mutations and factors they were. We're just thankful that the chicks are doing well and are healthy. Judging by the baby chick milestone, the oldest should show their colours on Thursday, that will be the 20 day mark for the oldest.

My bad, I just realised I said it wrong. If Kramer (cock) is split cinnamon and the hen is a visual then you will get cinnamon cocks and hens, normal hens, and normal/cinnamon cocks. If Kramer isn't split then you will get all normals, with the cocks being split cinnamon. Sorry, needed to adjust my mind back to cinnamon genetics.

lol, my head is still spinning on all the mutations and variations Hedwig is carrying. Guess we'll have to wait and see what Kramer is split for.

And spangle can have a pied spot on the head, too.

Going by the tail feathers, the first two are identical, the youngest does not have those two in the middle.
