Posted August 25, 201014 yr I bred one pair of fallows last year. A lovely fallow sky cock bird with a opaline violet split fallow eeny weeny hen. Their babies are ready to breed for me now and they are not quite as good as their dad, but already much better than their mum. I bought a fallow opaline green cock and his son who is a split at this year's auction. Today I am pairing all I have that is fallow and throwing a couple of normals in to further boost my size (hopefully). I dont expect a heap of visuals this year, but any I get are going to be like gold to me. I would like to thank in advance my friends Barbara Fisher and Sue Adams who are both breeders here in SA and are travelling a little way to talk to me and help me out today. It will be a great budgie girlie day and Im really looking forward to it. Will post pics when the pairings are done, but bear in mind, this is my first real season of fallows, so as far as show quality goes, there will be limits haha

August 25, 201014 yr I think there is some fallows up for sale at the Pine Rivers Auction this weekend too
August 25, 201014 yr Great pairs sunnie! I can see some winners from the Stan Watson in there right? The sky blue and one of the fallow hens. Gorgeous birds, Some lovley chicks from them
August 26, 201014 yr Author Thanks for the tip Kaz, but wont be able to take advantage of that this weekend and I will see how I go this season to start with Yes Soph, you are right, the first hen took out fallows and my blue boy got best blue
August 27, 201014 yr Oh good, I know who to call to buy some fallow outcrosses! Nice looking birds and all the best of luck with them.
September 13, 201014 yr Author Pair one have 3 fertile eggs, due in a week. Pair two have two eggs, pair three have four eggs, one fertile so far and the splits down the bottom are flirting and she is in and out of the box, but so far no eggs.
September 21, 201014 yr Author My first fallow chick hatched today (Pair 1) I found it just newly hatched before I left for work and crossed my fingers all day that mum would feed it. It's looking strong and healthy, so she's doing her job. I tried to get a picture, but really wanted a decent one of its head to show the pink eyes (that look like it has no eyes at all). Anyway, it is a wriggle worm and I gave up on the picture for now, cause mum was looking a little anxious and getting a picture at this point, is less important than upsetting her with her first ever chick. The other pairs all have eggs and are due to be hatching over the next week or so, except for the last split to split pair and it took a while for that hen to settle into things, but she is now on two eggs also.
September 21, 201014 yr Congrats on your first fallow chick I'm hoping for some fallow chicks this year also. I will be pairing my fallow and split fallows next week
September 24, 201014 yr Author The first fallow pair now have two chicks. I got home last night though and the cock is missing feathers from his head. I think the hen must have attacked him. I checked in later and she was out of the box, but he certainly wasnt acting bonded to her, in fact, he seemed intimidated. I tossed around what to do and have decided that I cant afford to lose him, so I am going to let her raise the chicks on her own for now and keep an eye on things and foster them if I need to. I have a sibling of hers still in the aviary who is a split, so I might fly him for a week and re-pair him to the sister next weekend, when I am putting down about 7 more pairs.
September 24, 201014 yr Author Pair 3: Split cock to fallow hen have their first baby - its not a fallow, so its a split. Fingers crossed next one is a fallow or that at least these splits are an improvement on last years
September 24, 201014 yr Congratulations  7 more fallow pairs down, or just pairs? You need quality splits to help. Are you breeding the recessive kind? I think from conversations we have had, that you are. So if you are, normals are good

September 24, 201014 yr Author Yeah, fallows ARE recessive. I have it all under control squeak. I am breeding a variety. Normal to fallow, split to split, fallow to fallow and fallow to split. I can only put one more fallow pair down and that will be, as I said, the fallow cock that has sired my currently hatching babies (Pr 1) to the Pr 1's sister. The next lot I put down will be a mixed lot of cinnamons, tcbs and normal/spangles etc.

I think from conversations we have had, that you are. So if you are, normals are good s-q all fellows are rec kind or am i missing something There is also a sex-linked kind : the English Fallow is a recessive trait while the German Fallow is a sex-linked trait. I can't be sure of this, as their are numerous arguments going on if all the fallow mutations are recessive, if this is sex-linked etc, so don't quote me. Good Luck with your next pairs!
