Posted August 24, 201014 yr I went to a club meeting tonight and received some questionable advice on fostering. I was told, you can't foster a red eyed baby into a black eyed nest because a hen will know its not her baby and reject it.
August 24, 201014 yr I really find it absolutly ridiculous in this day and age with all the info around that this sort of c**p is still being told to people. Birds DO NOT have the same colour vision as humans for start. Their vision is further down the visable spectrum. The rod and cone structure in the eye differs to our own. Hence the difference in what they see compared to us. Given what you have been told at the club meeting, if it were true, I would have lost so many chicks that I would have lost count. Quite honestly I can say in 20 years of breeding show budgies I never had a chick killed by a foster but have lost them from being killed by their own mothers.

August 24, 201014 yr If this was true then why wouldnt a hen reject her own chick because it was an only ino chick in the nest, too ?? Just as in normal society there is all levels of intelligence in a budgie club. Perpetuating old wives tales is still happeneing all over

August 25, 201014 yr There are a lot of old wives tales, told by a lot of old people at clubs. You need to take all advice you receive with a grain of salt, research it yourself, and determine the correct answer.
