Discoloured Eggs?

Featured Replies

Hi

I have had about 7 eggs this round that have been fertile, and then they go a dirty splotchy brown colour.

I have had 3 in one nest, and now in my other 2 pairs, both hens have 2 or so.

Does this mean the eggs were fertile, and the chick inside died (DIS) ?

The eggs are due to hatch about now, they only went discoloured a couple days ago.

It is hard to explain, I will try and get a picture

Thanks in advance

I'm not to sure S.Q but i've had some eggs like that lately and it turned out to be that the chicks were dieing in the eggs so that's what it could be.

These are dead in shell chicks. this can be caused by the hen getting off the eggs and letting them go cold, by her addling the eggs, and by the chicks dying in shell due to disease or contamination.

Never handle eggs to candle as this can contribute to this too.

Sounds like DIS to me.....
Sorry if I didn't make myself clear, but I guessed that already. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I don't handle the eggs, it may be the hen getting of and letting them get cold. But I wouldn't think that between 3 nests? Sometimes if the hen gets of the eggs and on of the eggs move to the corner of the box, I move it back to the others. I dont roll it, I make sure my hands are clean and gently pick it up. Hmm, it may be that. I suppose I will need to stop, I just don't want the eggs to be chilled in this cold weather.

We must both be doing something wrong :D:blink:

Bear in mind that hens rotate eggs in and under them and out again and in and under to regulate temperatures. Even if you see an egg out, it isnt always about a forgotten egg or an egg mistakenly out of the nest, it can be just its turn to be out from under for a moment. The hens know about incubation better than we do most of the time. Touching the eggs, shifting them, moving them back under may not be in the master plan of that particular hens incubation sequence.

Havent you sometimes looked in a nest and seen a hen reach out to an egg and pull it under her ?

this is exactly what i was going to say kaz

also you should let hen know when you cheak her box by tapping three times or so

ligtly she will gentaly get off and out for you to sneak a peek

then return soon as you close down door

no need to touch anything anything not in the concave will be as kaz stated the hens best knowledge to whats going on

 I am so stupid. I should know this by now. Oh well, lesson learnt I guess. Thanks for the help guys, I guess I will never touch eggs again. Should I take the bad eggs out, and look to make sure they are dead ( I know it sounds icky, but the chick may be alive if it is only slightly brown?)
