You can cut the feathers sure. But the problem is they continue growing and that is what kills the bird.

If you cut the feathers, why would they grow back? Don't feathers only grow back if they are either plucked or the birds are moulting? Clipping birds vents takes a while to grow back, so I would image it would be the same with the dusters? How could they eat with feathers All on their face?

I don't know because I have never had one that lived long enough to find out.

Cut feathers drop out and are replaced. Read member Livs account of her feather dusters and you will find they moulted like any other budgie. There are some who have said a feather duster doesnt moult, but it isnt true.

Thanks Kaz, I have read it this afternoon What I meant , though I did get the answer, is when you clip the birds do their feathers grow back straight away, or only when they moult. I heard someone say if you clip their feathers they just grow back instantly and kill the bird with the effort and stress.

This bird is a mop fore sure. the hen kicked him out of the nest a couple of days ago and he is 6 weeks old now, well he has lost most of his weight, I would he would be dead by tomorrow.

I thought I answered this..........above....cut feathers drop out....nothing does instantly...but a cut feather dies and is replaced.....sooner than a moult.

doesnt sound like a mop just sounds sick

if he was a mop hed have very long feathers by now

i still think hes just underdeveloped due tio something else like mine was

 

sometimes the bigger chicks just dont want to feed themselves and waste

Sorry Gb he is a mop his feathers are long very long, his bib is growing outwards and curling, his flights out growing out and there are heaps of them, double the amount i reckon.. his head is magnifent, but he has black feathers growing around the eyes which makes him look wierd, he has this massive head. 3 days ago he was huge but since his step mum through him out he has lost all his weight. She won't feed him anymore and the only reason he was so big was she was pumping the food into him.

His bum is messy because he is not eating, he is not sick. but he is just waisting away.

I will take some photo later or in the morning if I get a chance.

dont be sorry his your bird you would know but be nice to see pics even if he doesnt make it

That is something I have been thinking all arvo Gb. Poor little fella, if I get this job finished in time i will take a photo of for you. His bum is not messy like he was sick, you know some chicks come out of the nest or even in the nest some have a messy bum, I think it is nerves someone can correct me because I could be wrong, but I have had chicks with bums like this birds and all have grown up perfectly healthy after a dose of probotic. I think he has been chcuked out of the nest and he has got stressed because mum won't feed him anymore and he doesn't seem to be eating on his own, I have cropped him a couple of times but because he is a mop I would prefer nature to take it's cause. I know that is sad but that's how I feel.

That's I thought Kaz because before the hen chucked him out his bum was fine and he had a full crop and really big like he was a huge had full and in about 3 days he now skin and bone and all fluffed up, no food in his crop completely empty.

its a sighn of his system shutting down id cull it myself sad as it is its best for chick

Yes if they are strong enough to feed themselves. This bird was slow getting his feathers too , I think his body was working at an excelled rate and all the engery in him went to grow those feathers not his weight.
