August 15, 201014 yr Your cabinets look great, you must be very handy. Are you going to put sliding trays in for cleaning?
August 15, 201014 yr They look great  You may find cleaning them harder the way you have done the bottoms of the cages though.
August 15, 201014 yr It would be pretty easy to cut out a slide and add a tray though lol. The trays that came with mine are like that there GREAT!!! Edited August 15, 201014 yr by KAZ
August 15, 201014 yr Author Your cabinets look great, you must be very handy. Are you going to put sliding trays in for cleaning? I am no carpenter rachelm, this is the first time ive tried anything like this,i don't like trays i always vacum out the breeding cabinets doesn't bother the birds at all .When the chicks are due to leave the nest box i don't vacum as much, that allows seed abgrit & selgrit to build up on the floor of the breeding cage, makes it a bit warmer for the youngsters plus there is always seed in there face wherever they are.As soon as they are moved to the nursery cage i begin vacuming again aprox twice a week.
August 15, 201014 yr I vacuum my breeding cages too. My budgies are pretty much bombproof now snap i do same ...just need to watch what you suck up
August 15, 201014 yr Nice cages PJI, ou did an excellent job. Many breeders I know do not use trays ever as they like to have a build up of seed on the floor for babies, I personally like a clean cage and not encourage those stupid moths that hang around when seed is always there. BUT as I was saying many breeders here that have been breeding for years and years pair their birds up and then do not touch the cage until the pair have raised their young except they take away the excess droppings. They have said the more you intrude the birds don't breed to their best ability, BUT every one to there own I think, as I vaccum too BUT when the babies come out of the nest I do leave it alone until they go into the nappy cage, they seem to thrive better when there is plenty of seed on the floor

September 14, 201014 yr Author They are really good................looks real professional. Well done. Bet you cant wait to fill them They will not be used until our new house is finished being built Kaz.I am expecting some bad breeding results when that happens. Edited September 14, 201014 yr by KAZ
September 14, 201014 yr Author Why are you expecting bad breeding results ? Usually when you move house birds take a while to settle in,it's happened before to other breeders from what ive heard Kaz.New enviroment new surroundings etc so breeding results may not be as good as expected.

I get what you are saying Its no different to buying in an auction bird and expecting instant results. My mate Mark Hawke has moved house and he only just brought his birds over to the new place the past few days. Thrilled to bits they are finally moved too, but I am sure you are right about the settling in phase and how it affects the birds.
September 14, 201014 yr I love your cages Phill you did a great job. What sort of board did you use for the front rail?
September 14, 201014 yr Author I love your cages Phill you did a great job. What sort of board did you use for the front rail? To make those bank of nine Julie,i needed three sheets of 8 feet by 4 feet by 9ml hoop pine & 2 sheets of 8 feet by 4 feet 4ml for the backing. The front rail is 4 inches high by 9ml thick. The basic measurements are 24 inches wide each cabinet 19 inches high 16 inches deep.Next bank of nine i will do a start to finish post with progress pictures if you like cheers Phill
September 14, 201014 yr Author What is hoop pine is that like ply wood or is true pine. ///////// The supplier called it hoop pine Julie,it is plywood & he said it is one grade below marine ply so it's good quality it is $165 for a sheet of 9ml 8x4 not cheap.
September 14, 201014 yr Thanks Phill, I am making my new lot out of melamine or how ever it is spelled I was going to have all wire but after using them for breeding this I have decided I like the wood ones better, The wire ones have their good points, easy to clean etc. But to me the bad points are seed falls to the tray and is wasted and babies have trouble walking on wire. Woodedn ones are harder to clean but the babies can walk in them with out falling between the wire and the they can peck away at the seed all the time. Plus my new breed room is going to be 3mt by 3mt, I can fit more wooden boxes in than the wire ones.
