Posted August 3, 201014 yr Hi everyone i was just wondering What birds should i put in with my budgies in a free flight avairy? The cage is about....2 metres square so 2X2. i know i want finches( my pop breeds zebra finches at state champion level and is also building an avairy for things like parrot finches and exotic finches like that). I also think i might get some cockatiels, maybe just a pair. i currently have all my budgies in breeding cages(which are designed to house pairs of budgies for up to thier whole lives so its not cruel) what other kinds of birds would go well with these? i was hoping for a pair of parrots such as princess parrots but have heard they need a lot of care.Any sugestions?? thanks
August 3, 201014 yr 2 metres square or 2 X 2 is not a huge space Jeddo. In particular not for large parrots like Princess parrots and sharing with others. I have princess parrots and wouldnt put them in a share situation with others in that size. Finches or canaries will suffer leg injuries if you put them in with your budgies as they will bite at the feet of anything they consider on their perch. Havent you heard that its not wise to put straight beaked birds in with hooked beak birds ? Cockatiels can sometimes go in with budgies. There is always a temptation for people once they have what they consider a large aviary ( which yours isnt ) to put everything they have ever wanted in that space. Not a good plan If your budgies are living their lives in breeding cages all year long.......how big are those breeding cages and do they get full flight space and sunlight ? August 3, 201014 yr My suggestion is one you are not going to like - but if you want any birds in there, the only ones I would suggest are quails, nothing else.
August 4, 201014 yr that is a really small cage my cocky lives alone in a cage that small and she comes out as its not big enough for her 2 meters by 2 meters by 2 high is only a little bit taller than me my baby cage is 2 meters high 90 a crossed square and i only keep 15 budgies in it at a time (i know yours is 1meter 10 bigger but id only keep either 2 teails in it , or 30 budgies or one cocky or one galah one ringneck one bird anything bigger than a cockateail cannerys maybe 30 of them or mixed cage of finches in cannerys but still only thirty birds all up (specially if planning to breed ) birds need room to fly and move and as far as your breeding budgies living in permanent breeding cages big enough for them to live their whole life well unless their at least two meters long themselves and one meter high for each pair then i doubt thats possible
August 4, 201014 yr Author i think we have a miss under standing. its 2 metres wide and two metres long.
August 4, 201014 yr So that is nearly 7 feet by 7 feet take of an inch each way, If you really wany to put other birds in there why don't you put a divider down the middle, so then you would have 2 aviaries 3 1/2 feet by 7 foot long take away that inch I personally just like the budgies on their own but everyone is different. Cockatiels can go with budgies.
August 4, 201014 yr i think we have a miss under standing. its 2 metres wide and two metres long.No misunderstanding here......I can read .......A princess parrot alone needs at least 3 X 3 metres or 3 X 4 metres. Despite this being a big improvement for you and bigger than what you have it is NOT big enough for all that you want to do with it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Maybe this would be a good space for your budgies so they arent being held in breeding cages in rotation. As they do need space to fly and recharge their "batteries" after breeding, get some sunlight which helps with vitamin D and calcium retention for breeding etc.I am sure you are excited about the new space, but truly it is no time to cram it full of everything you ever wanted to have and since finches dont need much space you can use the cages you have your budgies in for the finches Edited August 4, 201014 yr by KAZ
