May 4, 200520 yr I would suggest that everybody has some liquid arnica in their birdy first aid supplies! That wound dosent look too bad, but you will need to keep a very close eye on the chick in case its a resuly of bullying. Anyway, the arnica. A single drop in half an egg cup of water is a wonderful bathing agent, soothing and healing. It could be dabbed on with a well scrubbed finger, or even a cotton bud. (available from herbalists and health stores) Its possible that Mum or Dad has simply caught the baby with a claw, but still watch for more injuries appearing. Anne
May 5, 200520 yr That baby looks plucked to me. They go fluffy before they get those spikey feathers and that poor thing has no fluff at all! See how it's all fuzzy with some spikeys growing through? I think that's how they should be. Are you sure it hasn't been plucked and bullied by it's parent? I just looked at your picture again and noticed your baby has a long tail. That would make it much older than the one in my picture! I really think something isn't right. That baby looks like he's been the victim of a lot of bullying. Is it getting fed? If not you should probably hand feed it so it's getting enough food to keep it going. You should ask a vet how to do this. Edited May 5, 200520 yr by Bea
May 5, 200520 yr He has been severely plucked! You need to figure out which parent is doing the plucking and remove them ASAP! If you don't have anything to clean the wound with, warm water will suffice for now. Make sure he stays warm, as he has no down on him to insulate his little body.
May 5, 200520 yr FAKAHANY Hi again like I said last night to you on the other post your last 2 babies have been plucked. How is the other one going? You haven't said yet how old is the young 1?? If about 5 weeks it might start feeding it's self put it in a cage so you can keep an eye on it, watch it and see if it can eat.Put the older sibblings in with it they might help feed it. Good luck
May 5, 200520 yr well Lady, the elder two are almost 5 weeks old, while the other two are 4 weeks old the difference is about 5 to 6 days between the elder two and the younger two ) hope i made it clear. as for the plucked babies. when am home i will recheck on the hurt one...... i can see that the other young baby the Lutino is going fine, thow bit slower. The one with his picture posted here I guess need more care i guess i need to figure out a way, plus i will monitor the hen today and see of there any need to isolate it with a partition in the same cage........
May 5, 200520 yr Good luck fakahany I hope your babies are going to be alright. The feathers will grow back when they are away from the culprit. It makes you mad when something like this happens and very sad! doesn't it? but they should look okay when they get there feathers back. Just have to get through the next week. Keep us posted and good luck again.
May 6, 200520 yr Yes I agreee with bea and the rest of the guys/gurls that said he/she was being plucked. (S)he should be covered in chick down. I would take it out and hand feed it. Also put some neosporin on the wounds so they don't get infected. I use neosporin all the time on my birds and it works great. If you take it out and hand feed it, it should be fine and recover. Also bea those "spikey feathers" are called pin feathers they get them each time they get new feathers in. The feathers come in the "pins" or shafts which protect the feather as it developes before it's ready to come out. The birds pick them off when they are ready. Which is why it's good to give the birds baths when they are molting because the water will soften the pins and will make it easier to break open for the birds.
May 7, 200520 yr Hows it going with your budgies fakahany? How are your last 2 babies going? I hope they are okay. Have you found which one was doing the plucking? Keep us posted. and good luck.
May 8, 200520 yr hello all, well i had several things I did these couple of days. Well i discovered that the mother was doing the plucking :fear actually i have seen waht i guess to be some violant acts against the kids. I seemed that she needed the nest for her own and nobody else. I guessed she was just about to lay an egg, which was confirmed later. so i decided to separate the mom in the same cage with a cage partitioner. Actually for test purposes i attached a second nestbox for her partition to see what she will do....if the violance was against the kids or was it for the sake of the nest box. She had several attempts to enter the nestbox and finally she setteled there...... On the other hand, i found the kids very cooperative .... they help each other...and i can see that all of them can eat seeds by now and can eat grean leaves..... well, for the father i found a very nice thing. I had an intention to keep him with the kids to take care..... it was like after an hour or so from separating the hen. i found him in her partition :fear how on earth did he manage to infiltrate the partition and get into the hen's part....... when i closly looked at the cage i found that the partition was not completely inserted and hence there is a small space where the male can go through from one section to the other, and only the male the female could not I discovered that he goes to the hen, make his job there and stay for a while and then goes to the kids and feeds them and take care of them...... well he is working like a double agent now i have to admit that i have done a very stupid thing here .... I have de-attached the second nestbox i have given for the hen because i wanted to attach couple of holding braces to firmly hold the nest box and at the miidle i had to leave out of home............... i came night and found the hen had layed an egg on the floor of the cage..... :fear Well..... i fixed the nestbox and attached it well and everything is going all fine now.the male and the female fdo have mattings........... i just do not know shall i stop them or leave them or what ??????? as for the kids, they are doing well i guess , all of the are getting out of the nestbox normally and stand on close perches............. I will post some pictures for them when am back home...... Thank you all for concern ))) have a nice day.
May 8, 200520 yr sounds like she was pucking becuase she wanted them out for the next lot, but since it seems you are giving them another round I would keep an extra eye on her becuase pucking becomes a habbit and the next lot can end up the same way.
