More Scaley Face

Featured Replies

Well I had to get more seed yesterday and I vowed I would NOT look at the budgies.... :D

Couldn't help myself....in a cage were these two with a sign... "English $40 each", a staff member came back from putting my seed in the boot and I told him they both had scaley face really bad, I said i'll take them off your hands for free...

He had to get the mannager, he comes over saying..."what one has scaley face"?...I'm getting pretty mad as blind freddy could see they had it... and trying to calm down there were other people in the store so I said quite loudly " you so can't sell these budgies they have bad scaley face"... his relpy was...."it's not that bad I'm not giving them away, you can have both for $60" and stormed off, I got the assistant to put them in a box and I bought them, told the manager on my way out quite loudly I would not be back I'll get my seed elsewhere....

So I have 2 budgies with scaley face again.... :P

If you look closely at this girl her beak seems to be split?

It was late when I bought them home, all I did was invomec them, and put them in the cage so I'll have a good look this morning.....

Poor little fellas. :D There should be a law against selling sick birds. Worse still is when the pet shop doesn't even know there birds are ill.

You are a very kind lady Anne, no doubt you have saved there lives.

Yes, they ahve scaley face, but I am concerned about that beak of the hen.

Once you ivermectin, the mites will die and they might be what is holding the beak together.

I have given this some thought and I am not sure if you could do this or not.

Would it be possible to use something like a superglue on her beak. Apply it very fine, to the outside of her beak, and it will hold it together whilst it has a chacne to reform? I was thinking clear nailpolish at first to help strengthen the beak, but then I thought that would be be enough.

Any thoughts from other on what might help that beak from falling apart?

I dont think you should use superglue or anything like that. Ivermectin for sure and if the beak is also badly damaged or split all the way through it may cost you a vet visit too.

Thanks Kaz and Dave for your input....I'm very concerned about the hen at the moment as well, she is not eating much, I'm going to heat up some egg and biscuit and see if she'll take it....I will update soon as to whether the beak is split or just badly deformed, or as Dave said if the mites are holding it together.....can I maybe scrape the beak gently with something ?????

Thanks Rachelm, but I lost the last hen I tried to save so I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much... :P She is in a very bad state, but I will try my best and keep you updated.... :)

I have never seen a bird with scaley face or had one with it as yet so I don't know what it looks like, but even I can see something isn't right with that hen!!

That pet shop owner should be reported!!!

Is scaley mite contagious to other birds?

 she will be okay.

Believe it or not I've seen scaly mite worse than that. The mites were completely covering the head and shoulders. I told them to go to a vet.

if you wipe the beak over with parriphin oil this not only kills the scally mite in very bad situations but it also will soften it and it will gentally come away dayly

i think what you have done is good and bad

the reason i say this is

yes you have now got two birds out of an environment and back to a place you can give them a chance

but if you think about it all thoughs other poor birds in their are bound to be also affected and if not now will be shortly being in same environment

i think if you want to have an impact on the changing of shop practice and bird hygiene their within

i believe a better method would have been to get the shops registered buissness number and then rang the local council and put in a formal complaint about the condition of the birds

as the ASPCA are not allowed to intervene in cases like this unless truly cruel eg starvation of animals and dirty surrounding bedding no water extra

however its the counsels job to send out the local animal dude to review and report on any neglect or bad management in the community as its the counsels to make sure the small bussnesses are in order the will get a warning and then i think 3 months to pull their head in

then if when the next visit a cures the complaint has not been dealt with then they get a hefty fine and possibly their license to sell animals taken off them

the counsel must send out someone to review all complaints made against animal neglect in the community when pet shops are concerned

buying the birds only helps them stay alive as a buisness and it does not fix the fact that other birds will in a few months time have this same issue

so a few pics and a complaint to the counsel the sure way to go done propply not just a call but a formal complaint in writing

I also have mixed feelings about buying scalyface, dodgy or injured birds.

Yes you " saved them" so they could be treated.

BUT petshops pretty soon figure out they have buyers for all their birds no matter what.........people who dont know or recognise ill birds buy them anyway. People who do know there is an issue and buy them and treat them. People who feel sorry for the lame, crippled, scalyface, or malformed birds and buy them thinking they are doing them a favour.

Not criticising what you did as I totally understand what you did,

BUT saying.............pethops learn they will sell all the birds they buy in to one person or another for differing reasons. There then is no reason they should say no to the crappy birds being offered to them for sale and the standards of the shop and the people they choose to buy off becomes very very low. They then buy off the birdmill type breeder who breeds en masse, with not thought to health or condition of birds, whether the birds breeding are of age or not, related or not etc. I have seen some of these breeders that breed solely for a few bucks from a petshop. They dont care and once a petshop begins to take anything crappy offered to them the petshop then doesnt care.

Why do you think he wouldnt give them to you for free ?? Aside from the fact that he had paid something for them ( lucky to be $10 each ) he did know there was something wrong with them and also he did know he would sell them to someone who felt sorry for those birds. He absolutely knew from his experience that even those ugly afflicted birds with various complaints still sell.

In a way, its better to walk away from places like that and never return and let others know of your complaints about such places. Let your feet make your choices not your heart.

Saving or rescuing birds should be for a better place and not be a "pay money over at a petshop kind of thing" . It becomes a sale when all said and done.

At the end of the day you went home with second rate unhealthy birds and he went home with the money in his pocket.........and he still made a profit off you.

GB and Kaz you are both 100% right, I know he made a profit out of me and he's $60 bucks richer for me being a mug but I couldn't just leave her.....this produce shop in question only sells grains and farm stuff a few chooks and sometimes the odd budgie or tiel....

I have done some research this afternoon and I've found a place that sells my brand of seed and hubby can pick up when required as its near his work, I think it's best that I never go anywhere that may sell budgies, other than a breeder, ever again...

I have emailed my local council and attached a photo, explaining my disgust at this establishment and asking them where I send my formal letter of complaint.

Anyway.... I've done what I've done and I just need to focus on getting her better to live the rest of her life as best she can...

i was not critical of your actions either hun and you have followed through with the right action so no harm done its your pennys after all and you can look at it in a way that although he got your money you got a reset and birds to prove his wrong doing you could get a vet cheak and letter to go with your formal complaint and this would give you more power to stop him in future

but best not to buy unwell birds to save best to report and have the prof in the shop still when the people come to look at birds and other animals being sold

or if you buy them theirs nothing to see and complaint is not valard

I know your not critical GB; This is why I love this forum so much.....

I've always believed that if you put a question out there people are going to have a response and that's all part of it.

I know that your comments are 100% correct, but I will always be the mug that won't walk away...

So I've made a promise to myself not to go to these places, hubby can collect the seed in future!!! :P

Looking very nice! The cock is a clearbody by the way, and an okay one.

$40 for a Show bird! :)

That is very expensive.

The hen is gorgeous :D

I was just looking at him Squeak. I wouldn't mind having him in my aviary.

they are looking good

If you think that's expensive, I suggest you not get into Show Budgies... $40 is nothing compared to what others have paid for good quality birds!

Back on topic, you're doing an awesome job Anne... well done and they're lucky to have found you.

I merely meant for the quality of the bird, and from a pet shop, that is expensive.

@ Nerwen Same! :D

They are looking much better now! Great job! I guess that the female's beak was fine after the mites started clearing up right? How is she doing now?
