Hi all, i have just joined and hope I am putting this in the right place.

 

I have a first time mum, she has come out with 2 chicks a bit over a week old apart. I have noticed today that the younger of the 2 appears a bit lethargic, its eyes still closed and no downing as of yet. I have some experience with hand raising and my thoughts are to do this with the older of the 2 (about 2 weeks and 2days old), so mum can focus on the young one (whom is about 6days old) . Do any of you agree with this situation?

 

I appreciate any advice given.

Doesnt have food in its crop and isnt very active at all. It hasnt been raising its head or chirping for food. The mum seems to be out of the box more than usual and thought this might be beacuse of the older one being so demanding

The Mums spend less time in the box once chicks begin to feather up and also when they can keep each other warm. Have you tried removing the older chick at feeding times so the younger one gets fed ? Also by what you are saying about the younger chick its weak and may be past that point of saving. If its body temperature feels cold, it is likely dying too. Check the chick and get back to us. Photos ?

 

PS How old is the mother ?

Removing the older chick at feed time might be the way to go. I'm just about to go back out and check will organise some pics too. The mum is about 12 months old, which is younger than i'd prefer but I thought she was actually a HE, then put her in bigger avariy with other budgies and we were soon proved wrong! the father is alot older and doing a very good job fussing over her.

Having trouble working out this photo business. Have checked the chicks, the dad has been in there and has actually fed them and both have food in their crops, think i will just keep a eye on the little one, still very warm which is a plus. Thanks for your advice!
