Expanda Foam

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if Expanda foam (Bostik) is safe to use in aviary? I am trying to mouse proof new aviary/birdroom.

Would be toxic while using it and chewable by budgies..........where do you need to block holes ? Photo ? Any other way ?

The gaps are in the roof. I was going to use steal wool and expanda foam. The shed is 6x3. Half will be breeding room and other half will be flight. We were going to put a ceiling up and insulate with insulation batts. We will insulate breeding side but was going to leave flight side.

We have done the floor gaps with cement.

Might be more hassle....but cheaper and safer would be actual cement.

But if you have no birds in there and none nearby you could use the expandafoam I guess. I just wouldnt want birds chewing it, if it was me.

Re the insulation..........dont use fibreglass batts. Use the polyester batts ....its safer.

If your flights are NOT as high as 2.1m or 2.4m insulate both sides.

Ceiling height is only 1.8m and 2.1 in centre so it looks like we will insulate both sides (polyester). I will use the expanda foam and steel wool for gaps in roof because birds won't be able to get at it if we put ceiling in.We will use cement for gaps they can access. Any suggestions for ceiling material? I was thinking birds would chew through plasterboard.

My birdroom is lined with coated ply and insulated with polyester batts. What you choose to use depends I suppose on if damp would get in.

Seems it only a garden type shed I would use foil bord for the roof, very easy to work with and works great blocks out heat. Then you could put ply board up so the birds can't chew. There needs to be a small gap like i think 10mm from roof to foil board then put the ply on. Plus it stops consendation too.

Thank you GB for your kind words and support. :flowers: :(

I have used it , put the birds back in when dry and they ate it, didnt really eat it, the hens just bit it off and dropped it on the ground until they couldnt get their beaks at it anymore.

I'm guessing it didn't kill them :D:unsure: but did it make them sick? I have expanda foamed the entire aviary/birdroom (a very dodgy job) but i'm going to put a ceiling and insulation in so birds can't get at the steel wool and expanda foam. I'm really hoping no mice get in :D

If birds can chew it I am guessing a determined mouse can too :hooray:

No there were no problems . Your covering it up so you will have nothing to worry about . you can cut the excess away with a knife once it drys.

I have my birds in an uninsulated shed... I have found that a simple 40watt light turned on 24/7 is enough to stop any condensation... there is no damp even when there is 70 birds in there and all windows and doors are closed. Its great for preventing night frights as well, and doesn't bother the birds at night.

Great tip. I am also going to put a radio on, someone told me if you leave a light and radio on it will deter rodents. I think mice can chew through the foam but i read somewhere they can't chew steel wool.

that is correct

INCORRECT

My birdroom always has a radio and light on and if mice are around that certainly doesnt stop them.

I find leaving the bird room to lit up the birds tend to party alnight. Tied cranky birds the next day

I agree..........I only leave a night light on in the birdroom, or the light from a hospital cage, anything like a 40 watt globe will tend to make my birds stay awake all night too.....and keep the neighbours awake too.
