Hi all,

Six weeks ago I adopted 2 little budgies. (long story)

A male possibly a pied blue and a white female.

Both were poorly bred. The little white one who I have named "Joan" of Arc was not a well bird. I am new to birds but thought I would give it a go.

She was unable to fly and one of her foot is slightly turned in. She can now fly a little, climbs everywhere, very bright and alert and her feathers look nice and has a new personality.

Ray the male is now going through his first moult and this is what what bought me here.

After reading the posts in the health section and seeing the pics confirmed my suspicion.

I have lots to learn and look forward to reading the posts.

Are you sure of the sexes of your birds ? As Ray ( the male ) is going through his first moult and did you know that young females have ceres with blue on it ? Blue with whitish is a young female.

No I wasn't 100% sure. I did assume that the blue cere did determine that he was a boy. Just went and had a closer look. You are right, it's a pale blue with some whitishness. It was originally all very true blue but light in colour.

I will try and put up some pics later. Maybe Joan is a different sex as well?

If they are 2 females will they be okay together?

I thought so.......Ray is really a Raelene :D When you said before about getting cranky I knew you had a female :)

Just googled more pics and think maybe Joans a boy? The cere is very mauve no white showing.

Now I'm all confused :)

Basing all our info on your descriptions so the sooner you do a clear cere photo with no flash used the sooner we can help :D

No need to confuse yourself googling the whole internet!

We have all the info you need to learn already here on BBC. :D

Here is a post where you can see what other members' recessive pied males look like. (Just to give you an idea of the lavender/pink color that some male budgies have on their ceres.)

Member's recessive pied budgies- click here

And here is a link to a post that teaches you a lot about telling males from females:budgie ceres- click here

You can also go over the the "What sex is my budgie" area, and read tons of posts where people have wanted to know what they've got, and there are lots of examples with pictures.

But like Kaz said, the quickest way to find out is to post a picture, and let us tell you! :D

When you post a photobucket picture you need to click on the IMG link on photobucket to copy the link. Then when you post here you click on the photo symbol and paste your copied img link into that box and it will appear here as the image/photo. You are allowed to post pictures here that are 480 by 640

PS your blue spangle is female.

Thanks for your help. :(

Is the white one a boy?

Pictures are too small.........................please repost in suitable sizes.......image code only as advised :(

***Never mind ;)

I will try for you

Hi and welcome.

I think Joan is actually a Ray and Ray is actually a Joan. In other words the blue spangle is definitely a hen and it looks like the white (an albino) is a male. Male albinos, lutinos and a couple of other varieties never get a blue cere but their cere stays a pinky purple colour. It looks like the albino is a cock bird but it's a tiny bit hard to tell from the pics.

Thanks for all your help and replies.

Yes I did have them the wrong way around. I will have to keep their names tho. Joan really responds to the name.

Joan? is very affectionate and will sit on my finger where as Ray(lene) is not interested.

I did buy some Vetafarm moulting aid, hope this was the right thing to do.

They have budgie seed and I have mixed in some vetafarm crumbles, millet spray a couple times a week and experimenting with different veg.

So far we have tried bok choy, apple, carrot and a homemade egg and biscuit. They like chewing on the apple branch.

They are very amusing and are really into each other. I love hearing them chatter.

Hi, welcome ;)

You have very nice looking budgies.

Thankyou.

I'm glad I came here. Everyone has been very helpful and now I know what sexes they are. :(

When we talk about SPANGLES as Raelene is ..........its about the wing markings mostly. Here is a great photo of two babies I once had and shows the difference between a NORMAL marked budgie and a SPANGLE marked budgie

the normal is on the left and the spangle on the right. If you think in terms of a photo negative taken of the budgie on the left and that photo negative is the markings of the spangle on the right ;)

Back again.

Budgies are doing really well.

I'm pretty sure they are both girls. Now when I go in to talk to them I just call them both birdie birds.

We got through our first moult.

My question is is it normal to chatter and chirp pretty much all day?

Yes, that is how they should be
