Sweet New Addition To Our Flock!

While me and my Dad were away last weekend, we decided to go visit the pet shop that was close to where we were. It has been a while since I've been searching and watching out for a good new bird cage for my budgies. So while we were at the pet shop, I was checking out all the different cages that were meant for birds.

Before doing that, I looked at all the different birds there. Amazons, Lovebirds, Finches, Conures, Canaries, Quakers, Cockatiels, and Budgies. Ironically, the budgies and cockatiels (Same 'cage') were both in together, and were my last birds to visit. They were in a plastic tank (All of them were clipped) together that was about 3 ft all around. I think there was probably at least one of each mutation of budgie in there it seemed, because it was a rainbow when you looked at them. Along with their chattering, chirping, singing, hopping around, climbing, preening, eating; I could have watched them all day. I guess there was at least 30 - 50 budgies with two English budgies, and about 4 or 5 cockatiels.

After watching them for a bit, I went off to look for a cage..... I ended up finding a perfect sized one that actually came with a deal of a free budgie! I hesitated at first, but my Dad said we might as well; since my sister has been wanting one for months now. :D

So, after packing up my new cage. (Will post in another thread) I went over to try and pick out a healthy, young male budgie for my sister. There were so many to pick from, so I was chasing around all of them trying to find a male. I bent down at eye level with them, and wouldn't you know it. A beautifully colored male budgie scurried over to me and started staring at my face. :P

After watching him interact with the other budgies a bit, I decided to get him. We had a bit of trouble catching him among all the other birds running for their lives, but luckily; his colors were so bright they stood out easily enough for us to keep up with him. :D

We got them to prepare a bigger box for him to be in because it was going to be a 3 hour drive back home. So then we gathered up some extra supplies and headed home.

This whole time, my sister didn't even have a clue that she was going to be receiving a new little pal. So she was sooo excited when we got home with a box wrapped in a sweater and a new cage. :D

After assembling his massive cage, and putting all of the other necessary things in it, we let put him in to his new home. Which was about 3 days ago. I'm a little late introducing him, but here he is on his first afternoon at our home:

He was eating and was suspicous of my big camera snooping around. You can see a hint of the violet on his neck.

He got a little spooked from something on the side, but I actually got a good piture of his back! :) See how beautiful he is? But the color doesn't do him justice, he normally has much more vibrant colors with violet patches all over his back and neck.

I'm pretty sure he is a male, but the pictures make it look like he has white rings on his nostrils, when there really is blue.

Here is a better picture that kind of shows his colors better:

He was hanging out near that dish for a while, but then decided to go for some perches up higher in the cage. Now he sits there and chirps every now and then and gets excited when he hears the other budgies down the hall.

We decided to name him Froot Loop after going through many other fitting names, but the nmajority of us agreed this was a perfect name. Barely anyone disagreed with it. We haven't exactly decided how to spell it, but we actually named him after the cereal, froot loops. My mom even thought of spelling it like Frewt Lewp. :)

I'll try to get a better picture of him today, so stick around.

I think I see some spangle, violet, and yellowface in him. But I really have no other idea what mutation he is. Anyone want to try guessing?

He almost is a perfect combination of the two budgies I already own, and I think he'll fit right in with the other two.

Just thought I'd share! B)

Awww! Remember quarantine! He is opaline, not spangle and yellow face type 1 I think. I can't tell from the pics about the violet though.

Oh yes, I would never forget quarentine. He is all alone in a seperate room from the other budgies right now. How long should I wait to end his quarentine?

Thanks, I'm not so good with mutations quite yet. I'll get some more pictures tomorrow in natual light, it's too late here now.

Quarantine is for at least 30 days. Good luck with him! Try veggies with him, he might be used to them.

Thanks, I'l see if I can find some fresh ones tomorrow for him to try. But all they had out for them to eat was seed, so I don't know how he will react to them. :D

He is gorgeous! I am sure your budgies will love him. Quarentine for a min. 40 days, longer is better .

Thanks, I hope they do. Okay, that will be perfect. It'll be close to the start of school here, so they will be able to be together around that time. That way they won't be too bored while I'm away. :P

How old do you guys think he is? It looks like most of his barring is gone, but there are little patches of barring left on his forehead. Do you think this has to do with his mutation?

Another thing I should point out is that I see a few feathers on the ground of his cage, which probably means he is moulting. Does this mean he is around 6 months old? I thought that he was, telling from his barring gone, the color of his cere, and the moulting. But they said they were all 4 months old at the pet store, another reason I should be wary of them. B)

He probably would be about 4 months.

Okay, thanks for the help! B)

he looks wonderful.

Thanks! :)

What a sweet looking dude he is

Thank you! :P

Looks like a goldenface opaline cobalt. Cobalts tend to have 'violet' flushes around the neck although they aren't actually 'violet' themselves. Cute little fullah

He is a beauty :D

Thank you. :D
