I used to breed a few years back...

 

I have an avairy about 2x2x1.8 ... (just roughly)

here is a photo

 

 

There is a "shelf" along the top which i used to sit the breeding boxes on and i had food dishes "hanging" around the front and side of the cages .. Is this an okay set up?

 

I did just post a topic in setting up your avairy as i was interested in ways to maximise the space i have.

 

Are there any tips you can give me?

 

I have 6 budgies atm 3female 3males. MY asumption is i would need about 4-5 breeding boxes lined along the top?

 

Is there special food i need to put out?

 

How many do you think i could have in this cage i was considering getting 2more?.

8 birds would fit comfortably in that size aviary.

One thing is to have plenty of space between those boxes , hens will get bossy , so you need to be ready to deal with that , Otherwise enjoy your birds.

Not a fan of colony breeding due to past experiences with fighting birds, killed chicks. Its the hardest and most stressful and hazardous way to breed budgies.

Also you have no safety door on your aviary so escapes as you enter will be a high risk. Try getting a net ........the kind that hangs from a hoop over a bed.......hook it up over the door and step through it into the aviary and reverse the procedure as you leave so you have a safer way not to lose birds. They see daylight and an escape route and will fly like the wind through a ********* in the doorway to escape the aviary.

Pity you didnt have your safety net set up as advised.......even a $20 bed net like suggested would have helped with the escape you have just had. I know what you are going through. When I first began I had escapes in the same way. they see just a ********* of daylight through the door and they are off

Which is why i was putting it up this morning..

Usually when i go in the cage i waited until my partner was home and he shut the door behind me.

I havnt really been out in the last wk due to having a newborn baby.

So i finally did yesterday.

Sucks my lesson is learnt on the same day i am trying to do the right thing to prevent it

I hope he comes back for you. He may do. You may have to spend some time outside with a net in hand.

He was beautiful colouring to. A bright bright blue and had a wonderful temperment
