Posted July 11, 201014 yr I just went downstairs to check on the budgies. I looked at Koko and she seemed to be fluffed up, and kinda tired looking. Like, squinting her eyes and looking just plain dull. Well, I was just talking to them for a bit. Then I noticed something shiny looking on Koko's cere. I kept watching, and I noticed that there was a watery liquid around her nostrils... I carefully examined her and I noticed her tail was bobbing slightly. She obviously seems sick, but I don't really know what it is. Can it be a cold? I think I almost heard a sneeze when going into their room, but it could have easily been something else. Any ideas what this could be? Also, what should I do to help her if she is indeed sick? Thanks in advance for any help! Kassidy
July 12, 201014 yr Respiratory infection and one that needs urgent vet care. You cant fix this at home. Off you go NOW !!
July 12, 201014 yr Author Thanks for the quick reply KAZ. I checked on her again and I noticed that she didn't have wet nostrils, (This could have been from her drinking her water, because these are auto-refilling ones that could very possibly get their ceres wet) but she was heaving a little like before and her tail was bobbing. I told and showed my parents her, and they were concerned too. So we will most likely be bringing her to the vet tomorrow. Here where I live the only possible certified avian vets around are probably about 3 hours away, but I still am looking. I'm not 100% sure there is actually an avian vet that close, but I'll ask about any possibilities of avian vets at our local vet tomorrow. (These are the people who saved Koko in the past from egg-binding, and I was very satisfied because a) I had to leave her there alone, and b ) She didn't even looked stressed afterwards) I'll tell you how it goes tomorrow and update on what happened. July 12, 201014 yr Author Okay, I'll see what they decide, but I'll be sure to consult with you guys when I come back. I'll probably take along a notepad to keep track of whatever I want to mention to you guys.... Wish Koko and I luck! Kassidy
July 12, 201014 yr Author Thanks everyone! Well, I asked my Dad and he said we can't go to the vet. So instead, I asked if we could at least call them. He agreed and called. I was there to listen and tell him any information they asked about. First, he told them what we saw that was wrong with Koko. (Tail bobbing, slight fluffing of feathers, etc.) They then asked what age see was, etc.... Then the my Dad just listened for a bit. (I guess the person on the phone went to ask someone about this) Then they came back and told my Dad something, and he said something about if there was anything we could do and stuff, then he hung up. They said it was Pneumonia. And they couldn't do much about it. They said we would have to find vets that expertise in avian care. I'll start searching for an avian vet as soon as possible, and start researching about Pneumonia once you guys confirm this. EDIT: YES! I found a list of animal hospitals' contact information I saved from before and we called one that's almost even closer than the other. It's about maybe 20 - 30 minutes away. My Dad talked to them longer than the other ones but I wasn't there that long to listen. When he was finished I went back and asked him what they said and he said that we're going in on Wednesday. So until then, what can I do to help Koko? I read that heat helps a lot. Also, to move her into another smaller hospital cage. How could I make this? I don't have any spare cages, so I'll have to make do with the one (She already lived in and that) I prepared for her until I get any more information. For the heat, I found our old Leapard Gecko Heating lamp.... But I have to change the bulb. Could I use this? And what watt bulb should I use in it. Any and all advice and suggestions are all greatly appreciated. Kassidy Edited July 12, 201014 yr by Kassidy
July 12, 201014 yr Hi Cassidy, Put her in a cage and cover her to stop any draft. Heat is very good about a 40w bulb maybe or more if you cant get the lamp close to her. Is she still eating drinking etc. Are you birds in the same cage because it could be contagious? Good luck with it and let us know how you go.

I'll look for a 40W bulb, (Or More) but the lamp will probably be close because it has a clip I can install onto the cage. I saw her eating this morning, and she was as alert as ever since I noticed these differences. The ONLY differences I noticed was.... - Her tail bobbing. - Her chest MAYBE heaving. - Her cere was wet that ONE time, for an hour before it dried. It was clear, and could have easily been water. - She was kind of tired looking, but nothing too bad. And that was it. This morning she wasn't tired looking anymore, but this was obviously caused by it being close to their bed time when I noticed her. Also, I haven't seen any liquid around her cere, so this could have been a false alarm, but her tail IS still bobbing and her chest is also heaving still. Either way, we're taking her to the vet for an appointment on Wednesday, because this way we will know if her health is at risk. Until then, I'll provide extra warmth and watch her more often to see any differences in her behaviour. I'll keep you updated. Kassidy
July 13, 201014 yr Thanks for the help. I'll look for a 40W bulb, (Or More) but the lamp will probably be close because it has a clip I can install onto the cage. if its an energy saver globe there wont be heat coming from it. The government banned all other globes and they are no longer available http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....4&hl=globes

I'm not sure what other options we have, but the smaller 40W bulb won't be able to fit inside the lamp I have. Here's a video I took of Koko to show you how she looks: Sorry it's dark, but the video setting just does that to the image. Kassidy
July 15, 201014 yr Author Thanks again! The vet visit went really well. The vet there wasn't a certified avian vet, but it helped that her family used to own budgies and even a couple relatives used to breed them. She didn't know exactly what it was but you were right KAZ, she did prescribe Baytril. :hap: It was one 15mg tablet that we had to take to the pharmacist to crush for us. So now we have to dissolve it in 5mL of water and keep it refrigerated until we have to use it. Then we have to give her 0.11mL twice a day orally for 10 days. She also gave us a syringe to use for giving it to her, and it helps that I got her used to drinking from one with water in it before. I'll update on how she does tomorrow morning. Wish us luck! Kassidy
July 15, 201014 yr Author Hello all! I gave Koko her medicine his morning! She didn't co-operate very well, but I managed to get some into her. She didn't look good afterwards, but now she looks twice as better than before. I saw her eating, drinking, and her poops are looking better too. She still has a slight tired look to her, but seemed better and even let out a very cute chirp for once! I'll be giving her another dose tonight, so wish me luck once again! Kassidy
July 17, 201014 yr Author 3 more doses done. Last night, this morning and then again later this evening. The only thing that I'm worried about is how she flicks her head after I get the medicine in her beak, she almost spits out couple of drops. Should I be worried about this? It seems to be working, her poops are back to normal now. Only a slight green tint to them, but very similiar to Kasper's healthy ones. Much better than her other sloppy, mushy, watery ones. I'll keep you posted! Kassidy
July 26, 201014 yr Author The medicine only seemed to help change her poops back to normal, but now they are all mushy and liquidy. I'm not sure if the medicine is getting into her right, and now Kasper seems to be getting sick too. I think it is caused by her not consuming it right, if you read my above post you can read what she does. I'll be calling the vets soon to book another appointment. I think another reason for these problems is because the syringe I am using is a bit too big. Would they have any needle points to had on to the syringe at the vets? Like one that isn't pointy, such as those ones on air pumps? I'll be cleaning out her cage again tomorrow, is there anything that I should change for her to help comfort her? Also, I asked the local vets if there were any certified avian vets around. They said that there might only be ONE 3 hours away. They also said that it might be closed down now. :party0011: I guess I'll have to hope for the best. If anyone can give me any advice, please do. Also, if you need to know any additional info, feel free to ask. Thanks for the help!

July 27, 201014 yr Author you should of been useing a crop needle to feed meds if its ones you administer by mouth sorry im not much help id say go back to vets are birds insame cage ?? They don't have crop needles, they are only normal vets. Yes, I have an appointment tomorrow morning. No, but they were in cages beside eachother since before she got sick, and they still are. A little off the topic of Koko, Kasper seems to have red poops. It doesn't look like blood, but the poop part is all light red? He doesn't have any food or mineral blocks that are red, but Koko does. Koko was in with him, but would she be able to feed him any of that stuff? Oh, another thing that could possibly turn his poops red would be his pellets, but I'm not sure..... Is there any pages that I can read up on crop needling or something on the FAQs or in any threads? I'll start searching in the forums now though. And something else, Kasper got hurt. I was moving him out of his cage, and he flew off my finger to the floor, then he slid a little and got his foot stuck under a computer part. It happened really fast, but I ran over and lifted it for him to get out of. Then I carefully picked him up and put him into his cage, but I noticed he was lifting his foot off from the perch. He seemed okay, but then I noticed some blood on his leg, it seemed to stop bleeding. But he won't stay still for me to look at it and I don't want to stress him out by looking at it. I went back and felt the under the thing he got stuck in, but there wasn't anything sharp for him to get hurt on. Any suggestions? This was all my fault, and I feel so sorry for him.... and Koko, but I'll try to do my best to help them.
July 27, 201014 yr Oh, Koko and Kasper are having a rough trot. I'm sorry I don't have anything to offer as I am new to budgies. I will follow with interest and hope all goes well.
July 27, 201014 yr Author -Update- Koko looks a bit better now. She isn't as puffed up or shaking anymore. But now I have to be careful, because I know how well they can hide illnesses. I reasearched on crop needling, and it seems harsh, but I understand how important it is. I'll try practicing holding Koko the way these videos I found showed how to, but I didn't like how much he was shaking and waving the poor birds around. Here's the two videos I watched: Kasper is fine now, his leg is okay. No more bleeding, but still looks sick. I'll be going to the vets and asking for a tube for crop needling, but how big should it be? Thanks for the help. Edited July 27, 201014 yr by Kassidy
