Posted June 29, 201014 yr Hi. this might seem like a starge question to ask but me and my family are moving house and are getting a garden with the house and my dad said he'd build me an Aviary. I am so exsited but I do not have a single clue how to maintane one :fear So I thought this was the perfect place to get some info. Also I would like safety and security tips if you wouldnt mind. Thank you Jodie. Any help is appriciated.
June 29, 201014 yr Make sure you have a safety door so no one flies out when you need to go into the aviary- we almost lost my favouritethat way (but I caught him :fear ) Also mouse proof the bottom and make sure your dad uses the right size wire (I its too big the birds can fly through or get stuck)
June 30, 201014 yr their is many different threads with aviary designs and tips check them out hun you need to mouse proof whole aviary not just floor
June 30, 201014 yr Ooooh how exciting! Many people do many different things. A concrete floor will assist in keeping the aviary clean but many people run with sand floor but you have to dig out regularly and replace sand. Water proofing is pretty important too. Oh so many things....... as GB says have a scrounge around the different threads to see what others have done. Edited June 30, 201014 yr by KAZ
June 30, 201014 yr My biggest tip would be to lay concrete. We didn't, and the place just stinks like mice. It also makes it easier to clean, so you can just give it a sweep every couple of days.
June 30, 201014 yr if you do lay concreate make sure its on a angle draining eitheir to front or back to let exess water run off this asists with cleaning if you ever may need to wash out also bit of sand ontopof concreate is great as stops you needing to scrap out floor with scrapper you just sweep it up and then the garden enjoys it cover the roof at least half in if not three quarters at least also buy a lock i have cameras :fear but even pets get let out and stolen by just young kids board also Gard from draft if show birds
June 30, 201014 yr Author Thanks for the help guys I really appricate it alot. Cause I really am clueless as to what to do with an Aviery. With were thinking about building a shed so they have and indoor flight too and have the choice to go outside. And do a saftey door inside there to and keep a small space for storage for like medical supplies, food spare dishes ect:I am so exsited I have all these thought going through my mind like of how it will look!! But I may sleep there myself. LOL I love my budgies and I like to sleep with them too. I hope I'll also be able to buy a new pair too soon! Also are there any small plants I could grow in there to stimullate a more naturall envoroment??I mean I may have to wait until it is acually built to think about that. if you do lay concreate make sure its on a angle draining eitheir to front or back to let exess water run off this asists with cleaning if you ever may need to wash out also bit of sand ontopof concreate is great as stops you needing to scrap out floor with scrapper you just sweep it up and then the garden enjoys it cover the roof at least half in if not three quarters at least also buy a lock i have cameras but even pets get let out and stolen by just young kids board also Gard from draft if show birdsThat angle thing is an amazing Idea!! And by a lock do you mean a padlock and key lock?? Cause I would think thats what you meant by that but I want to ask.Make sure you have a safety door so no one flies out when you need to go into the aviary- we almost lost my favouritethat way (but I caught him )Also mouse proof the bottom and make sure your dad uses the right size wire (I its too big the birds can fly through or get stuck)Is 6mm okay for mesh and square?? I have nightmares of mice getting into the aviary and I dont have one yet!! :oWhen everyone says concreate are slabs okay or do you mean like prober concreate that you lay manually??
