Posted June 27, 201015 yr Hi all. I have been busy trying to make my breed room user friendly as I am always looking to improve things on the space I have. To start with I hate my space but then at the same time I need to be great for what I have and I am. My breed room is about 26 feet long I think and only 5foot wide that's the bit I hate (not wide enough.) Anyway the first part of the breed room is about 9ft I think by the 5 ft and I have 16 cages. then you walk into my baby aviary 6ft by 5ft which leads into the second breed room. There is a entrance to this room seperate also, so if I have visitors I take them that way. The second breed room is 11ft by the 5ft. So far I have my large nappy cage just inside the door and then 2 more large breeding cages made out of a old book case and right along above these cages I have a shelf for show cage traing etc. I have seed bins under this shelf. .At the far end of this room is my trophy cabinet which I am very proud. On the right hand side where the window is I have 2 rows of six wire cages and a seed bin. Well what I have been working on is the shelving to keep the wire cages up. Till now all I have used is too old tables with some wood on top and all the seed would go everywhere. So I have decided to build new shelving use white board. First I had to reinforce the back wall to hold the shelving. The shelving is 190cm long 45cm wide. Will take photos tomorrow. But I am really happy with what I have done completley on my own with totally no help from Greg aggrrrr. I have decided to cut holes in my wire cages to hang nest box off something that I have been putting off for 2 years. Couldn't bring myself to do it but the time has come Edited June 27, 201015 yr by splat

June 27, 201015 yr Author Thanks Shannon I was going to use the hooks but I am making the shelving with sides so the seed just goes to the front. Kaz if you read this can you post a picture of nest box on the wire front that is upside down.

June 28, 201015 yr Author okay here are some pics of my shelving. This is inside the bottom cupboard part and how it is attched to the wall. I have made a lid so I can store things there that I don't use much. Plus i can check to see what gets under there time to time. This is the lid closed . Getting the sides on for the top shelf All most with the top shelf on.
June 28, 201015 yr You are doing a great job, with the shelves & the cupboard, on the bottem.
June 28, 201015 yr Author Thanks Macka, Gb and Kaz, I have been going to do this for a while because I was sick of the cages sitting on tables and on top of each other and seed going behind and everywhere, but to be honest I got the idea of the cupboard from Clearwings breeding room. Brad one of our club members is a builder and he has lined out CW breedroom and made shelving with a cupboard like this. I thought brillent so I went home and copied it, smart little vegemite aint I  But I made a huge improvement on it because CW doesn't have sides to it and so seed still goes down the sides. I brainstormed and came up with the idea of fixing the sides with those little pieces of dowel. BUT to make it sturdy the shelves our fixed to the wall with brackets. IT doesn't give at all now study as. It was funny when I bought the wood from bunnings in Shepp I asked for 190cm cuts but then cut in half because I needed it to fit in my car. I got 2 pieces like this. Well that was a waste of money because it was too hard to work with it like that. After folding down my sits etc because I have a Hyundai I realised the front passanger sit alost lies flat so then I was right off I went shopping again and bought 3 pieces at 190cm and yep fitted in my car like a dream could of got another foot in there too. Greta little car very versitil. Well nearly finish will post more pics later.
June 29, 201015 yr Nice work, it always amazes me how big some peoples set up are Well compared to mine anyway
June 29, 201015 yr Author Nice work, it always amazes me how big some peoples set up are Well compared to mine anyway Taboo my set is very ordinary and basic, I dream of having something Kaz, Daz and Clearwing. It will never happen so I have to be greatful for what I have But one thing I am doing is making the best of the space I have I am always trying to make it more friendly useable and this shelf system is part of that. Like I don't have to get down on my hands and knees now and vaccum the seed underneath and at the back of the cages on the floor, ( it was a very hard job and and I always thought it sucked)
June 29, 201014 yr Author I used this corner dowel stuff to fill any gaps so the seed stays on the shelf and not behind. All finished except I have to put my little work station shilf on tomorrow. Oh yeah I have done 3 cages, changing the fronts just 1 to go. Going to have 4 breeding cages and 2 just to hold hens etc are the come after of the breeding box for a rest before going into the aviary. The work station will be this end of the shelving. Meaning from the photo ( nearest to the camera) Already it is great love it
June 29, 201014 yr Looks great !! You must be very pleased. Its so much nicer working with the birds in the birdroom when everything is exactly where and how you want it. I went and bought my last lot of melamine today for the corner cabinets in my birdroom. Loaded the hearse up with melamine Now all I have to do is find time to make them. I, too, have to do it alone. Ken would...but he's no good at getting things straight or square or level and being like that he would waste the wood
June 29, 201014 yr Author Thanks Kaz, Yes Greg is the same cut cut straight if his life depends on it, shhhh don't tell him that . My jig saw packed it in yesterday so now I can't cut anything I have to depend on Greg to do it now, sucks. Because everytime I ask he grumps at me . I stiil want to fix up the shelving above the nappy cage it I have 3 pieces of melamine at 45cm by 95cm left to use.
June 29, 201014 yr Author You need a small circular saw next mate That's what Greg uses, but his is soooooo heavy I can't lift , his old one I tried one day but I am a bit scared on it . Have been thinking of buying my own a light one and getting the courage to use it

How many breeding cages do you have?
June 30, 201014 yr Author 22 counting 4 of these wire cages , 1 large nappy cage and 2 hospital cages. I had more breeding cages last year but found it too much work and plu I have taken down most of the ones I can't see into so I only have 2 cages now that I have to use the step ladder. I had 7 cages more last year but they have gone now.
