Posted May 2, 200520 yr Can someone help me soon please. I took 2 of my babies to have their wings clipped and was told and shown they had feather mites (I presume lice) and told to hold the birds and wet thoroughly with Avirol Bird Mite and Lice Spray. okay I can try and hold the inside birds and spray them, but how on earth am I supposed to catch the Aviary birds, hold and spray each one?? Is there a better way of doing it?? When the babies wings were clipped, and as they were white, it was easy to see the little brown things on them, and there was a lot, but most of the aviary birds have dark wings. Sorry if I sound stupid, but my eyesight is far from perfect due to a brain tumour (Please no sympathy for me, I'm used to it by now) But it does make things a bit awkward when it comes to catching and treating birds individually...I'd probably spray myself instead :(Laughing out loud): Cindy PS. I want to do them ASAP
May 3, 200520 yr Cindy, nothing you can buy over the counter is much good for feathermites to be honest. What the bird needs is a course of ivermectin, available (legally and rightfully) only from your vet. Its usually a 3 week course, one treatment per week. Its NOT expensive, yet totally reliable. Accepting anything less is like accepting that washing up liquid will cure human headlice. The treatment consists of a carefully measured drop of liquid being applied to the birds head, under the feathers, and it works, properly. Take the bird to the vet, get the ivermectin treatment. It works. Anne.
May 3, 200520 yr Let me know how you get on Cindy. Are you in the uk? If you have trouble, please let me know, I will shake feathers if I can for you.

I phoned 3 avian vets, but they do not like to us ivermectin, they said just use the mite spray, remove biurds from aviary and wash it down with bleach. How she thinks I'm going to catch let alone rehouse 18 budgies, I don't know. Catching them okay but where to put that many birds? I dont think hubby would like it if i put them in the Bedroom :(Laughing out loud): Thanks anyway Anne, I'll manage somehow Cindy
May 3, 200520 yr They reckon it is too strong for little birds and has bad side effects. Maybe they just dont want to stock it. Well so far I managed to catch 9 and sprayed them and placed them in a seperate cage. The others are in 2 other cages, not near the first lot, and I will attempt to do them tomorrow as we had a cold breeze come up before I could do them, and I did not want to risk them getting a chill. Anyway I wont need as much soap in the shower tonight as the budgies took off most of my skin :(Laughing out loud): :(Laughing out loud): Wow those little critters know how to hang on . When my hubby got home he thought I was teaching them a new ballet Cindy
May 3, 200520 yr I feel sorry for your poor hands! Your right, they sure can hang on when they want too!!! It sounds like your making good progress on getting them all treated.
May 5, 200520 yr I feel sorry for your poor hands! Your right, they sure can hang on when they want too!!! It sounds like your making good progress on getting them all treated. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I finally got the last of them done, but I had an asthma attack either from the spray or all the feathers flyiing around, so I phoned my vet (not an Avian vet though) and he checked them all and sprayed them for me and only cost A$20, so I got out of that pretty easy. But 1.Blondie does not look too good, still very lively, but her dropping are dry and hanging onto her bottom. Would this be shock from the spray 2.and Jack seems to have little marks on his head like blood. Could this be from the spray I have made an appointment with an Avian Vet but cant see her until tomorrow PM. Any advice will be apprectiated Cindy
May 5, 200520 yr Poor you having an asthma attack when you were trying to help your birds! $20 is really good. It costs us $50 just for the vet to look at the bird let alone do anything! I'm glad your taking your birds to the vet tomorrow, i'm not sure why they would be showing those symptoms.
May 5, 200520 yr Oh gosh you sound to be having a fun time. Wish you had been nearer-I'm sure we would have all come over to give you a hand.Good Luck. Julie
May 6, 200520 yr Oh gosh you sound to be having a fun time. Wish you had been nearer-I'm sure we would have all come over to give you a hand.Good Luck.Julie <{POST_SNAPBACK}> :(Laughing out loud): It would be long walk Julie, but thanks for the offer. If I had a private jet I would have flown you over here :(Laughing out loud): The Vet said Jack and Blondie were okay, Just that blondie had some bruised feathers???? but that would not give her a dirty bottom. and Jack is just stressed from (1) mites and (2) starting moult. So I will still keep them away from the aviary birds until I'm 100% convinced they are okay. Who would think that such lovely little things can cause so much worry. Cindy
May 6, 200520 yr I know what you mean! For such little things they sure know how to cost a lot of money!
