French Moult Or Something Else?

Featured Replies

Posted

I have had this hen for about 4 months. After i brought her home (from pet shop) i noticed she had no flight feathers. I assumed her wings were clipped and they'd grow back.As an absolute beginner i didn't know any better.

A couple of months later some feathers had grown back but always fell out straight away. Did some research and thought it could be french moult. Tail feathers are fine.

So now i have notice she is flying around her cage okay, one wing good, other wing a bit dodgy. I thought i'd see how she'd go having a fly around in the spare aviary. After a few minutes i noticed blood on her wings.

Has she got french moult? What should i do?

French moulters often have trouble growing in new flight feathers. They break off and bleed just like yours is doing. I would say ...yes she is.

Thank you Kaz for fast reply.

Any chance she will recover and be able to go into flight with others?

her beak looks rather long in picture

is it just me or is it long

her feathers should regrow

loss of three end flights also can be mineral deficient and lack vit mn d

Looks like it could be night fright injury? Its right on the outer part of the wing, I've seen similar injuries quite a few times in the morning after big night frights in the aviary.

Info in initial post seems to indicate ongoing issue not a one off night fright.

I will try to take a better photo of her beak tomorrow or Monday. More minerals and sunshine, will do. Thank you. :D

I am very happy to report that this hen is now out in the flight aviary. This morning she was "hover" flying in her cage. No blood, no lost flights, so i decided to pop her in the aviary. I watched her for about 15mins. No problems. She has been in all day now.

I will take some photo's tomorrow. :D
