Posted June 23, 201015 yr I was just making sure if organic green lentils are okay to feed to budgies. I was just out buying some groceries for the budgies (lol) and I saw these in one of the aisles and I thought I remembered reading somewhere that these were good or okay to include in their diet. If so how would you serve them? I know that they were too hard to eat raw, so would you boil them or something first? Thanks in advance!
June 23, 201015 yr Yes they are fine. You will have to soak them in water and rinse and drain off a couple of times over 12 hours before serving.

Thanks, So just to make sure; if I put some in a dish of water now and follow this schedule: After 8 hours - Drain After 2 hours - Rinse, then put in dish of water again After 2 hours - Drain, then serve in a dish Would that be okay?

June 23, 201015 yr Author Okay, thanks for the help Kaz. My budgies soon will be enjoying their lentils.
June 23, 201015 yr Quinoa (pronounce: KEEN-wah) is another great addition to the budgie diet. It has very little carbohydrate but is protein rich and contains calcium and iron. The seeds sprout very quickly. If you soak them over-night, they will have sprouted in the morning - even in winter. You need to rinse them several times after soaking to remove any bitterness.

Hi, Where would I get this at? I will be happy to try them out with my budgies. Thanks.
June 23, 201015 yr I brought some Quinoa for myself to try the other day at Woolworths, they had black, red and white Quinoa.

I have only seen the white quinoa. You can also buy it as flakes but I get the seed so that you can sprout it. It costs about $1.70 per 100 grams in Queensland. Another bird lover has told me that it is small fraction of that price in California. Still, a little of it goes a long way.

Once I finish the soaking proccess do the lentils go bad? If so, how long does it take for them to? I'll start soaking some tonight and see how it goes, but hope I get an answer by tomorrow so I'll know after they're done. Edited June 24, 201015 yr by Kassidy
June 25, 201015 yr I put some green lentils in warm water to soak yesterday afternoon. About 8 hours later, I rinsed them and put them to soak again in warm water until this morning. I rinsed them again and ate one. They were quite soft and tasted good. I dried them and gave them to the budgies. They did not hesitate and started eating them at once. I only soaked enough for all the lentils to go in with the budgies' vegies. I am not attempting to store any.
