2 New Hens

Featured Replies

Posted

We had a sale at my club tonight and I purchased 2 birds. Both are light green hens. 1 is an 07 normal hen. She will be ready to breed in a couple of months and is a good breeder. I also bought an 09 opaline light green hen. She is a nice looking bird. She was late 09.

Some  are a bit fuzzy but I will get better pics when I can.

I already have some Greg Gregoriou bred cocks, so these hens will mean the bloodline should be maintained.

i like the one on the right very much dave

good luck with them nice birds but love her most

You have a good plan for these birds Dave....post some pictures when you can of their possible future pairings

I had already discussed my plans for these birds with Kaz, before Kaz had posted, to get her feedback, so Kaz thinks I should post my plans up here.

I want to keep bloodlines together, so as I am doign with my Cec gearing bloodline, I am planning on keeping my Gregoriou bloodline together.

I am thinking of putting the light green opaline hen with a normal green cock.

I am looking at pairing the normal green hen with this cobalt opaline cock.

I also have a greygreen cinnamon hen from this breeder who last time I out her down decided to eat a few eggs. Maybe she was not ready. Maybe I should try her again. Here she is with the opaline coablt cock I mentioned.

:D Love to see them up in lights Dave :D

Did I type something wrong here? "Up in lights"? What are you talking about?

On forum as compared to behind scenes B)

I find it interesting, the talk about ,mateing up birds belonging to X blood line,

Just because the are breed by Bill Smith, that might be as close,as they will

be breed, the pair, could be a bird from Tom Jones & the other bird from Jack Hill,

you buy a Bill Smith & there is no Bill Smith line in the birds at all, apart from being

breed by him,you can buy birds but until you have bteed with them your self, for a

season or 3 & breed your own line, you are just buying a bird you like the look of.

In some ways you are right Macka, unless you actually know the breeder and talk with the breeder and actually take some interest in the breeder's birds.

Of course, you do not know what I am thinking nor do you know what I have done, you once more presume you do. I suppose that is why you are the mysterious rude invisible posting guy with birds no one has ever seen.

As always, your input is well....

Hi Dave nice birds, the opalines seem to be larger than others? or at least ones I bred are to some extent.( Pet types only mine.)

With the blood line breeding, how do you manage a certain blood line without interbreeding? I'm still working on genetics but haven't got the blood line thing sorted either. :D

You need to keep a very good record of what birds bred to what birds and who was produced. Never allow father/daughter or mother/son pairs, uncles/nieces, aunts/nephews are okay. It is all about records and planning.

I actually agree with Macka here, sorry, but I am guilty of buying or trying to buy a certain breeders birds and i have been put in my place by more experience breeders saying the same as Macka just said. Just because you buy a bird from a certain breeder doesn't mean they are related unless you ask or get a pedigree on their background.

Most breeders top breeders bring in birds and of course have different lines going so unless you are sure there is no garentee they have the same.

But as Macka said once you breed from them for a few years then they are you bloodline based on what you bought.

After all good luck Dave nice hens. And yes you are the breeder and only you know your plans.

I understand what you are saying, and of course therefore what Macka is alluding to, but when a person is starting out breeding, it is important not to buy one bird here and one bird there. It is much better to get a few birds from the one breeder and seek to establish your own bloodline. I have previously purchased birds from this breeder, however I unfortuantely lost two hens, so these hens are replacements if you will.

As for what a person should do, I suppose it comes down to who you want to believe. The more experienced breeders who "put you in your place" would actually go against the advice offered by other very experienced breeders such as Binks. All good breeders bring in outcrosses to add features to the stud, so you never know excatly what you are getting, and you never will until you have established your own bloodline, but from everything I have understood, when you are starting out, it is best to get birds from one or two main breeders. In regard to show birds, I am definitely in the novice class.

I totaly agree with you Dave on that. When I first started out I went to 3 different places but then settled on one breeder mainly and out crosses from the other two breeders.

Now I believe I have a stud going as all my birds are now related and they all have the same look. Well almost anyway.

You are doing great.
